The University of Illinois Foundation (Foundation) is the official fundraising and private gift-receiving organization of the University of Illinois (University). It works closely with alumni and friends, faculty and staff, corporations and foundations, as well as campus development professionals to create fundraising programs and opportunities that benefit the University.
The Director of Accounting will provide operational management of the accounting operations of the Foundation. The position ensures accurate financial reporting, budgeting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and effective management of financial resources and accounting staff. This role will involve guiding the accounting team, driving financial decision-making, and implementing systems for continuous improvement and efficiency.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct all day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring accurate and timely information. This includes all areas of internal and external financial reporting and analysis, budgeting and expense management, endowment pool management, and cash management.
- Direct and mentor the accounting team by providing guidance on day-to-day operations, managing performance and professional development of staff, and fostering a team-oriented culture.
- Assist with the coordination of external audits and ensure compliance with relevant regulations, tax reporting, and accounting standards specific to not-for-profit organizations. Ensure internal controls are in place to safeguard the Foundation's assets and ensure financial integrity.
- Work closely with financial leadership to provide financial insights and support the Foundation's mission and strategy. Interpret and communicate financial data and updates effectively across a wide range of stakeholders.
- Continually evaluate and enhance accounting systems and processes for efficiency and effectiveness. Stay current with industry trends and best practices in not-for-profit accounting.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field
- At least 10 years of experience working in a large and/or complex accounting or financial services department, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role
- A strong understanding of not-for-profit FASB accounting principles, regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Proven ability to lead, inspire, and develop a team
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work collaboratively, foster relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders, and communicate complex financial information clearly and effectively.
- Proficiency in accounting software, financial management systems, and Microsoft Office products
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced degree
- Certified Public Accountant
- Experience with software implementations
