The DFW region is the home of six major sports franchises including the Dallas Cowboys (NFL); Dallas Stars (NHL); Dallas Mavericks (NBA); Dallas Wings (WNBA); FC Dallas (MLS) and the Texas Rangers (MLB).The Director of Dallas Animal Services is appointed by the City Manager and works with the council-appointed Animal Advisory Committee. The Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of all programs and initiatives of Dallas Animal Services (Department). Please note the following about this exciting opportunity:The Department provides sheltering, enforcement, and prevention services for the City of Dallas. To achieve the animal welfare goals of the community, the Department works closely with multiple organizations including but not limited to: Operation Kindness, SPCA of Texas, Friend of Dallas Animal Services, Spay Neuter Network, and the Texas Humane Legislation Network. The Dallas Animal Services Department has an 85% live release rate and provides services for approximately 70 to 100 animals on a daily basis. The Department has 184 full-time equivalents reflected in its full and part-time employees and an annual budget of $19.9M. Employees include full-time veterinarians and veterinary technicians who complete a variety of surgeries, critical cases, and medical procedures annually. The Department has an active volunteer corps of approximately 134 individuals that assist with programming and provide daily, in-kennel enrichment activities for the animals. These volunteers also assist the Outreach Team in the provision of programming, including free rabies vaccine clinics in the community. Outreach team members connect residents with available resources for pet care. This team also responds to calls from the community regarding animal laws and ordinances and providing support and resources for pets and people in need in Dallas. Completion of a bachelor's degree in animal science and behavior, biology, veterinary technology, zoology, public health, business administration, public policy, or related field or ten years of increasingly responsible management experience is required. A master's degree can substitute for five years of experience. Candidates with experience in a leadership position with an animal welfare organization or animal shelter or in a position with transferrable skills in a non-animal shelter position are highly desired. Strong administrative skills including grant and contract management, budget development and administration, human resource management and the ability to navigate large organization systems are essential. The annual salary range for the Animal Services Director is $150,000 - $200,000 +/- DOQ. Placement within the approved salary range will be dependent upon career experience and qualifications.
