Director of Development

The Boys and Girls Club of Harlem (BGCH) seeks a seasoned fundraising professional who will provide leadership, strategic direction, management, and coordination of the organization's fundraising efforts with the goal of maturing its fundraising functions to meet its growing programmatic needs.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Since 1980, the Boys & Girls Club of Harlem has proudly served the youth of Harlem through our afterschool, summer, and community school programs. Our mission is to provide access and opportunities for young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible community members.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Development will be responsible for building the fundraising strategy and providing leadership on all fundraising initiatives for the Club, including annual giving, special events and sponsorships, and major gifts (financial & gifts in kind). The Development Director will identify, organize, and manage fundraising activities with a focus on establishing new relationships and increasing support from individuals, corporations, and public and private funding organizations. The Development Director will be responsible for grant management working with grant writers and funders. The ideal candidate will work in close partnership with the CEO and Board of Directors to develop an annual fundraising plan. Reporting to the CEO, this role will comprise part of the organization's senior leadership team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising Strategy

  • Establish a multi-year/multi-channel fundraising strategy designed to grow the donor base, engage and retain existing donors, and increase giving levels.
  • Collaborate with the BGCH development team and key stakeholders to meet annual revenue objectives.
  • Develop and implement fundraising policies and procedures, including donor pipeline strategies (foundations, corporations, and individuals).
  • Design and execute planned giving campaigns and activities that align with Club's mission.
  • Cultivate, steward, and solicit prospects through face-to-face visits and personalized proposal development as needed.
  • Conduct and analyze prospect research with a keen understanding of moves management to steward donors towards major gifts.

Fundraising Operations

  • Attract and manage volunteers who support the Club's fundraising activities.
  • Manage donor acknowledgments, database management, and reporting.

Fundraising Communications and Marketing

  • Work steadfastly to tell the story of BGCH .
  • Manage the creation and production of all fundraising/outreach materials.
  • Ensure proper donor recognition in publications and oversee data accuracy.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated success with planning and executing fundraising campaigns and events.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; strong executive presence.
  • Must have exceptional verbal, listening, written, and presentation skills augmented by editing and grant writing experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of individual giving vehicles including planned giving.
  • Mission-oriented – believes in and promotes the Boys and Girls Club's mission and values and considers them as a framework for all professional decision-making and activities.
  • Donor database management and reporting experience.
  • Able to work collaboratively and effectively with and among diverse populations.
  • Must be able to use sound judgment to make decisions and solve problems independently and effectively.

Requirements & Education: Minimum seven years of demonstrated competency and leadership in at least one of the following functions: Resource Development, Grant Management, Strategic Partnerships, Philanthropic Management, or Business Development. Bachelor's degree required.
