Job DescriptionThe Position: We are looking for a talented Director of Engineering - Core & Communities who will lead a team that utilizes a modern technology stack to create, update, and maintain our frontend and backend infrastructure and tools that power the Communities side of our business as well as other core internal tools and services. This role entails leading a small but impactful team comprising frontend and backend developers, along with QA engineers. This position reports to the VP of Engineering. Who you are: An experienced people manager with a solid understanding of technology who can directly interact with the Executive-level stakeholders and organizations engaged with the Core & Communities team to understand, design, and direct your team in building iterative, scalable solutions for the present and future business needs. You will leverage your technology experience to direct your team in meticulously selecting the latest technologies, architectural frameworks, and design patterns for implementation. Your role will involve providing visionary leadership and innovative architectural direction to a dedicated team of engineers focused on the mission of engaging our communities and supporting our ability to collect revenue. The ideal candidate is an outcome-oriented, technology-focused people leader with significant experience managing teams in designing, building, and supporting modern web services and tools. Additionally, they demonstrate a strong partnership with stakeholders, ensuring alignment between technological innovation and business goals. What you will do:
- Lead and mentor the Core & Communities engineering team, providing strategic direction, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, establishing the frameworks for managing, executing work, and directing the activities of your team.
- Collaborate with executive-level stakeholders to identify and understand their business needs, present tailored solutions, secure buy-in, and lead your team in executing high-impact projects that drive revenue growth
- Experiment and innovate with new technologies, propose and develop proof of concept builds, and present the results to your peers and leadership across the Tech organization
- Partner with other directors and tech leads across Tech, Communities, Finance, and other orgs to gather requirements, validate feature proposals, and drive large system improvements.
- Provide the team with the tools, confidence, and motivation to make decisions independently that lead to their personal and professional success.
- Responsible for Core & Communities teams technical strategy and roadmap - driving towards business outcomes and creating success metrics in close collaboration with other Engineering Managers and stakeholders and aligning work to achieving those metrics.
- Champion whole team quality approach guiding team management on accountability and growth opportunities on roadmap deliverables.
- Mentor the professional development of each engineer by helping them build and execute personal development plans that map to our organization goals. Aggressively recruit and hire talented engineers.
- Work closely with the Stakeholders to ensure that the company objectives are met on time while simultaneously balancing necessary engineering requirements and influencing the overall technical direction and user experience of our website.
QualificationsRequired Skills and Competencies:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Engineering or 3 years of equivalent experience
- 3+ years of experience working on or managing high performance engineering teams, preferably developers and QA engineers in a combined org
- Experience leading teams developing modern, high traffic web applications and backend services using JavaScript / Typescript. Experience with React and Next.js is a plus
- Experience practicing modern software development methodologies: Agile, Scrum, XP, etc. with a clear focus on app security, performance & maintainability.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with experience of developing & instilling a culture of broad product ownership.
- Strong understanding of metrics and analytics to guide data driven decisions.
- Strong understanding of CRM capabilities and functionality, preferably with Salesforce.
- Strong understanding of API architecture including REST and GraphQL.
- Strong understanding of data collection and storage methodologies and tools like MySQL / PostgreSQL / MongoDB / Elasticsearch
- Strong understanding of AWS Services, Docker Containers, and CI/CD
Additional InformationCompensation
- Base Salary: $175,000 to $185,000 + 30% Bonus
