Job Description :

Nestled in San Francisco's Excelsior neighborhood on a nine-acre campus, the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (SFCJL) is a center of excellence in providing a continuum of care. This includes the Frank Residences, offering assisted living and memory care services; the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center, featuring long-term skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation, and an acute psychiatric unit specialized in mental healthcare for older adults over age 55; and the Jewish Home and Senior Living Foundation.

Grounded in the Jewish values of dignity, compassion, and community, the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living, fondly referred to in the past as the Jewish Home, was founded in 1871. Today, 150 years later, it continues to build upon its legacy of enriching the lives of older adults.

Position Overview

The San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living is at an inflection point in its 150-year history, guided by the visionary leadership of its first female and physician CEO. With a bold new strategic plan poised to shape a sustainable and thriving future, the organization seeks a dynamic and resourceful Director of Major and Planned Giving to play a critical role in this journey.

This leader will spearhead the growth of our major gifts program, identifying, cultivating, and stewarding high-capacity donors ($10K+), while also managing a smaller planned giving program to secure SFCJL's long-term financial strength. Ideal candidates are energized by the opportunity to contribute to a mission rooted in Jewish values and devoted to serving older adults with compassion and excellence. They bring a track record of relationship-building, strategic thinking, and fundraising expertise, along with a passion for advancing the organization's mission at this pivotal time. This full-time hybrid role reports to the Chief Development Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

Major Gifts

  • Manage a portfolio of 100–125 potential and current donors with the capacity to give 5-, 6- and 7-figure gifts.
  • Grow major gift revenue from individual donors to $1.5M+ (from $650K) over next three years.
  • Working in close collaboration with the CDO, support the development and implementation of comprehensive fundraising plans and initiatives to achieve revenue targets and advance organizational goals, ensuring alignment to strategic priorities and integration with other channels of revenue.
  • Develop and implement cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies; ensure consistent, high-quality communication with major donors through customized proposals, presentations, and engagement activities that deepen relationships and communicate the mission and impact of SFCJL.
  • In collaboration with our Director of Philanthropic Experiences, create high-level donor events to strengthen donor relationships.
  • Foster a culture of philanthropy and a collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages teamwork and innovation.
  • Stay abreast of healthcare fundraising trends and best practices in philanthropy, incorporating new ideas and approaches into our work.

Planned Giving

  • Develop a plan for growing membership in our Carob Tree Circle legacy giving society by identifying strongest prospects among those donors who have given for 10+ years.
  • Cultivate an active and qualified planned giving prospect portfolio of 20-30 donors annually.
  • In partnership with the Director of Marketing, evaluate existing and new partnerships with planned giving consulting firms to build and maintain legacy pipeline.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 8-10 years of fundraising experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in growing major gift programs.
  • Self-directed, performance-oriented individual who has demonstrated initiative and achievement of goals.
  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills with an understanding of how to convey a compelling story about an organization's work and impact.
  • Able to solve practical problems and make sound decisions; identify and anticipate obstacles and challenges and propose and implement solutions.
  • Superior skills in organization, planning and attention to detail and ability to coach and encourage these skills in others.
  • Committed to fostering an environment of trust, transparency, and mutual respect.
  • Able to work frequently at our San Francisco campus, with flexibility for remote work.
