Suburban Lutheran congregation seeks an Organist/Choir Director to lead the music program, enriching worship and extending its reach into the community. Our members appreciate and value good music in their worship services. Good Shepherd wishes to be known as “the beautiful church that makes beautiful music.”

The ideal candidate will be both an accomplished church organist with a love of the Lutheran or Anglican liturgy and hymnody, as well as an experienced choral director with the talent and interpersonal skills to coach and conduct adults.

We will consider two individuals — one Organist, one Choir Director — for the right candidate(s), with compensation that is commensurate with shared responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • AGO Certification or Master's Degree desired.
  • Skilled in organ performance.
  • Experienced in choir direction. Ability to recruit, coach, and conduct.
  • Experience with Church music program planning and administration.
  • Leadership, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Appreciation of Good Shepherd's rich musical legacy and ability to incorporate it into the musical direction moving forward.
  • Primary familiarity with Lutheran or Anglican liturgy; experience in other musical styles.
  • Resourcefulness in contracting guest musicians for special services.
  • JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Sunday morning worship at 10 AM. Choir warm-up prior to service. Organ prelude and postlude plus service music as needed.
  • Mid-week choir rehearsal.
  • Additional services on Christmas Eve (2), Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday.
  • Attendance at Worship & Music Committee meetings – 8/year.
  • Planning and preparation of all music including liturgy, anthems, prelude, postlude, in an open atmosphere of collaboration with pastor and others.
  • WE OFFER

  • 15-20 hours/week, at $28-32,000 per year depending on experience.
  • Four weeks paid time off per year.
  • First right of refusal for weddings and funerals in our sanctuary.
  • Opportunities to grow hours and remuneration as the program grows to include children, occasional contemporary or jazz liturgies, handbells, concerts, community outreach.
  • Well-maintained instruments including three grand pianos and Casavant-Frères Organ 1965 (1992, 2006 Konzelman additions) that features two manuals and pedal, 1,592 pipes, and electro-pneumatic action.
  • Use of church facilities for private lessons.
  • Adult choir of up to 10 vocalists.
  • Very extensive, well indexed music library.
  • Financial support for continuing education and paid singers and instrumentalists.
  • A rich musical legacy.
  • Reports to Chair of Worship & Music Committee of the Church Council.
