Under the leadership of the North Iowa Cultural Center & Museum (NICCM, a 501c3 nonprofit organization) Board of Directors and it CEO, the Surf Ballroom National Historic Landmark in Clear Lake, Iowa, is a cherished venue for live music, private events, and cultural celebrations. A renowned National Historic Landmark, the Surf Ballroom is a key part of American music history, famously known as the site of the final concert of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. The Big Bopper Richardson in 1959. Our mission is to preserve and enhance the historic and cultural significance of the Surf Ballroom while ensuring it remains a vibrant and welcoming space for the community and visitors.

The Director of Operations is a hands-on, dynamic leader responsible for ensuring the day-to-day success of the Surf Ballroom as a historic site, private event facility, and live music venue. This role focuses on operational excellence, team management, and delivering outstanding guest experiences while supporting the long-term preservation and growth of this iconic landmark.

Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

* Oversee the daily operations of the Surf Ballroom including security and protection, ensuring smooth coordination of all departments, including facilities, events, and guest services.

* Manage event logistics, including set-up, execution, and breakdown for live performances, private events, and community programs.

* Ensure the facility remains safe, well-maintained, clean, and compliant with all safety and accessibility regulations.

* Collaborate with vendors, contractors, and service providers to ensure high-quality operations and services.

Event Management

* Work closely with clients, performers, and event organizers to coordinate schedules, staffing, and logistics for a wide variety of events.

* Oversee on-site operations during events to address any challenges and ensure an exceptional guest experience.

* Manage contracts, permits, and compliance requirements for private events and performances.

Team Leadership

* Supervise and support a small team of operations staff, including custodial, event setup, and technical support personnel.

* Train and motivate staff to deliver excellent service, maintain the venue's standards, and foster a positive team culture.

* Develop and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage for events and facility operations.

Facility and Historic Preservation

* Ensure the historic integrity of the Surf Ballroom is maintained through regular upkeep and preservation efforts.

* Identify and address maintenance needs promptly, coordinating with specialists as required for historic preservation projects.

* Oversee the use and care of equipment, ensuring functionality and longevity.

Administrative Duties

* Manage budgets for operations, events, and facilities, maintaining a focus on cost efficiency.

* Track inventory, supplies, and equipment needs for events and daily operations.

* Generate reports on event performance, operations metrics, and guest feedback for leadership review.

Community and Guest Relations

* Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, performers, and visitors, ensuring their needs are met and concerns addressed.

* Foster positive relationships with local vendors, community organizations, and partners to enhance the Surf Ballroom's reputation and offerings.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in hospitality management, event operations, or a related field highly preferred.

* 5+ years of experience in hotel or venue operations, event management, or facility management.

* Hands-on experience in managing live events and private functions, including logistics and client relations.

* Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships with staff, clients, and vendors.

* Familiarity with historic preservation or experience working in historic venues is a plus.

* Proficiency in Microsoft Office and event management software preferred.

* Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the event schedule.
