The purpose of the Piedmont Governor's School for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (PGSMST) is to provide a regional math, science and technology educational program for highly motivated, high achieving and gifted students to supplement the educational programs of Henry and Pittsylvania Counties and the cities of Danville and Martinsville. The Governing Board of the Governor's School appoints a Director, who serves as the chief administrative officer of the Governor's School.JOB LOCATION: Supervision of 2 Sites, IALR in Danville/Pittsylvania County and PHCC in Martinsville/Henry County. The selected candidate is expected to spend equal time at both sites during the week in order to supervise both programs. IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Executive Committee (consisting of superintendents or designee from all 4 school divisions). GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Executive Committee, the Director serves as the school's primary instructional leader and is responsible for the administration and supervision of the Governor's School and its multitude of instructional, non-instructional and extracurricular programs.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develops and maintains an effective educational program consistent with State and Federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies and goals of the Governing Board; meeting and conferring with students, parents, faculty and staff; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
- Actively recruits students from each division and implements strategies to ensure that the student demographics of the program are similar to the demographics of the school divisions it serves.
- Implements and monitors the PGSMST strategic plan and reports on progress related to identified indicators at the end of each year.
- Plans, organizes, and directs implementation of all school activities for PGSMST.
- Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school; provides for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business.
- Initiates, designs and implements programs to meet specific needs of the school; directs and monitors the development of the school's instructional program.
- Works with instructional staff members to create and implement a rigorous, project-based curriculum that integrates STEM across the content areas.
- Provides ongoing professional development to instructional staff and ensures that teachers employ research-based instructional practices on a consistent basis.
- Makes recommendations concerning the school's administration and instruction; assists in the preparation of the school budget and monitors expenditures.
- Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other required information and data.
- Coordinates and works with the central administrative staff to address school issues and concerns.
- Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by the school's staff and students; interprets and enforces school division policies and regulations.
- Schedules classes within established guidelines to meet students' needs.
- Assists in the development, revision, and evaluation of the curriculum; supervises the guidance program.
- Works collaboratively with each high school guidance department to discuss student progress and/or needs and to communicate program eligibility.
- Maintains open communication with high school administrators of the divisions and students being served.
- Communicates effectively with parents and addresses parent/student concerns in a timely manner.
- Partners effectively with other organizations and local businesses for the purpose of enhancing programming for PGSMST students.
- Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according to Board policy and the due process rights of students.
- Attends special events held to recognize student achievement; attends school sponsored activities, functions and events.
- Maintains and controls the various local Governor's School funding.
- Supervises the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.
- Supervises and evaluates all personnel assigned to the Governor's School.
- Participates in the selection of all school building personnel.
- Evaluates and counsels all staff members regarding their individual and group performance.
- Supervises and evaluates all activities and programs that are outgrowths of the school's curriculum.
- Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of the Governor's School program; thorough knowledge of curriculum design, implementation, evaluation and refinement; thorough knowledge of prescribed policies and procedures; knowledge and understanding of student growth and development; knowledge and understanding of the conditions and dynamics of the diverse school community; skill in oral and written communications; ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Governing Board and Executive Committee members, students, parents, teachers, support staff, associates and the community; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to set expectations, build capacity, model learning, lead symbolically, manage effectively, and respond to constituent groups and the community.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master's Degree in education administration and considerable public school administrative and educational experience.
