Salary : $53,352.00 - $79,536.00 Annually Location : Kenosha, WI Job Type: Regular - Full Time Job Number: 082####### Department: Transit Opening Date: 08/22/2024 Closing Date: Continuous General Overview of Position Under general supervision of the Route Supervisor, coordinates the activities of City bus drivers/operators and related personnel and equipment in order to maintain an efficient and fully operational municipal bus system. Work is reviewed through observation and written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures. This position will remain open until the needs of the city have been met. Example of Duties & Responsibilities
  • Prepares schedules and dispatches bus drivers/operators on designated routes.
  • Maintains log of scheduled runs, number of vehicles, names of drivers and other pertinent information.
  • Retrieve and count cash for bus and streetcar operations.
  • Maintains payroll and fare records.
  • Prepares daily mileage, time cards and transfer records and reports.
  • Answers route information inquiries. Records movement and location of vehicles and road repair crews to inform the public regarding current schedules and routes.
  • Receives and records telephone calls and radio reports regarding municipal bus operations.
  • Reports all accidents, tie-ups, delays, fires, equipment breakdowns and other operating or maintenance difficulties.
  • Dispatches extra vehicles and emergency crews to scene of accident or breakdown.
  • Reports difficulties and dispatches orders to appropriate personnel, divisions or departments to restore service and schedules.
  • Assists in the evaluation and design of bus routes and schedules.
  • Assists in transit driving duties as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

RequirementsEducation, Training and Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, supplemented by at least one (1) year of post high school education.
  • Minimum of three (3) years work experience with progressively increasing responsibilities.
  • Minimum of one (1) year recent work experience involving driving, dispatching and/or other closely related activity for a bus or other similar transportation system.
  • Minimum of three (3) years recent work experience dealing directly with the general public (customer service).
  • Must have keyboard skills and proficiency with a varied range of computer application programs.
  • Must be able to type at a rate consistent with departmental needs.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements:
  • Knowledge of bus systems, scheduling and operations.
  • Ability to read maps (learn the City of Kenosha's geography).
  • Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to schedule employees and equipment to insure a fully operational on schedule bus system.
  • Ability to learn to speak clearly and learn radio telephone dispatching.
  • Ability to think and react quickly in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
Physical Requirements:
  • Task involves the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as working over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20 - 50 pound) items and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or over) items.
  • Task involves the complex operation of gasoline, electric, or diesel-powered machinery or shop equipment requiring the manipulation of multiple controls, fine adjustments or both; or the sustained operation, on a production basis, of such devices as offset presses with associated equipment.
Environmental Requirements:
  • Task may require infrequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

  • Task requires sound perception and discrimination.

Other Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Must obtain a commercial driver's instructional permit within five (5) days of being hired.
  • Must obtain a commercial driver's license (with P and airbrake endorsements) within one (1) month of being hired. (Training provided by the city)
  • May be required to provide a personal vehicle for use on the job.
  • Appointment is contingent upon pre-employment DOT physical and drug testing.
  • Incumbent will be required to participate in the City of Kenosha's random drug and alcohol testing program.
