SummaryUnder supervision of the Landfill Supervisor, this position is responsible for operating heavy equipment to compact refuse and cover with fill dirt daily at the landfill. Duties include digging new landfill pits and various earthmoving tasks necessary for refuse disposal, cleaning, performing maintenance checks on equipment and repairing minor problems daily. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, inclement weather, and overtime as needed by the department. This position is considered weather essential personnel.
Essential Responsibilities- Operates perform daily maintenance checks on trash compactor, dump trucks, water trucks, elevating scraper, backhoe, road grader, water truck and bulldozer, as needed.
- Fuels and repairs equipment when minor problems are observed during daily inspections.
- Assists with spotting incoming trucks and vehicles at landfill dumping site, when needed.
- Fills in on any position or shift as required.
- Keeps all heavy equipment clean inside and out.
- Abides by all SWP3 and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality rules and regulations.
- Picking up trash around the landfill site and entrance roads
- General housekeeping duties, sweeping, mopping and keeping the office space free and clear of any debris.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities- Ability to operate trash compactor, 23 yd. elevating scraper, road grader, water truck, semi-tractor and trailer, backhoe, front end-loader, mechanical tools, power washer and hand tools.
- Strong verbal and written communication skill.
- Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
Required QualificationsRequires a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment. Must be able to obtain a Class C Solid Waste License on Sanitary Landfill operation and attend a waste screening class within two (2) years of employment.
