Job DescriptionPerforms responsible semi-skilled work in the operation of 20 or 28 passenger buses; does related work as required. Able to work a varied schedule with sporadic work hours throughout the year. Work schedules typically consist of driving passengers on day trips, 2-4 times a month. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Senior Center Supervisor.Essential Tasks* Operates a bus on an assigned route and schedule.* Inspects bus and related equipment and reports defects prior to departure.* Prepares trip records regarding mileage, vehicle defects, etc.* Provide excellent customer service to all passengers.* Board and off-board passengers, including passengers in wheelchairs and similar mobility devices.* Secures passenger wheelchairs with tied down straps in vehicle.* Provides routine information concerning schedules to passengers.* Always follows safety regulations and accident procedures as necessary.* Completes accident, incident and/or miscellaneous reports to document unusual circumstances.* Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.* Performs other duties as assigned.Qualifications* Must be 21 years old* High School Diploma OR General Equivalency Diploma* Valid North Carolina Driver's License* Valid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement* 5 years of driving experience* 1 year of experience operating a passenger bus* Must be able to drive a passenger bus under stress and pressure of time constraints.* Must be able to drive a bus in typical urban and highway traffic.* Must be able to drive a passenger bus in various weather conditions, i.e., rain, sleet, snow, wind, etc.Special RequirementsPhysical RequirementsHearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with customers including co-workers, citizens, and applicants.Both are necessary to converse with maintenance and office personnel, supervisor, passengers, and the general public. Worker often uses the telephone and two-way radio.Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:* Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.Primary responsibility is driving a bus. Worker must be able to see traffic conditions, other vehicles, traffic signs and signals, persons waiting at bus stops, street names, persons who need assistance, etc. Both eyes 20/22 - R 20/25 - L 20/25 corrected* Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see vehicle controls, panel indicators, report forms, etc. Both eyes 20/30 corrected* Depth perception - Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships. Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same time and in seeing that passenger is safely seated before moving vehicle.* Field of Vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area to cover surrounding and/or approaching traffic while looking at a given object or instrument.Accommodation -Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check the entire work area.Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly back and forth to check conditions and people within the bus to outside traffic conditions, signs and signals.Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:* Light to Medium Work* Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally; and/or* Exerting up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and* A negligible amount of force constantlyamount of force constantly to move objects or assist passengers on or off the bus.* Type of Physical Demands* Reaching - Extending the hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.* Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s).* Fingering - Picking, pinching or otherwise working with fingers primarily rather than the entire hand or arm.Mental Activity/RequirementsReasoning:* Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to work tasks, practical situations and requests made by supervisor or the public; to comprehend and respond to a variety of situations in a courteous and expedient manner; to understand and follow all traffic laws and safety regulations. Good judgment is necessary.Mathematics Ability:* Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Essential when making change, counting moneys and making reports.Language Ability:* Read: Ability to read safety and other manuals, instructions, directions, street names, schedules, equipment readings and other documents relating to job.* Write: Necessary to complete required reports.* Speak: Ability to be conversant in voice and diction so as to participate in discussions with other employees, supervisor and the general public in person.Environmental ConditionsPhysical Surroundings:* The Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Although the worker will be located inside a bus, he/she will be maneuvering the vehicle in various weather conditions, i.e., rain, sleet, snow, wind, etc., and will be out in those conditions at times when exiting the vehicle at the center, when assisting passengers in wheelchairs board or off-board or at end of duty.* Employee will be exposed to traffic jams and accidents. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment:* Equipment regularly associated with office-based work.
