SUMMARY: Running Press, an imprint of the Hachette Book Group company, is a leading publisher of illustrated books, stationery, and mini kits in the categories of Body, Mind & Spirit, Gift & Popular Culture, Food & Drink, Entertainment, Lifestyle, and Licensed Publishing. We are seeking an Editor to join our highly creative and collaborative team to acquire and edit approximately 15 books, stationery/book-plus products (such as card decks, guided journals, puzzles, games, and advent calendars), and related projects each year. The location of this position is flexible and can be based in New York or Philadelphia. Please note our current hybrid model is two days per week in the office. Effective in January 2025, HBG's hybrid model will be 3 days in-office, 2 days working from home. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identify trends, topics, and formats in Lifestyle, Art, Body, Mind & Spirit, Creative Self-Help, and Gift spaces that can be developed into books and stationery/book-plus products.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with authors, literary agents, artists, and other creative communities.
  • Evaluate and develop book proposals and pitches, making commercial, creative, and imprint-focused cases for acquisition.
  • Edit and develop manuscripts, and act as a project manager through all stages of the publishing process.
  • Actively partner with authors to bring their visions to life, from acquisition through publication.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with design, production, production editorial, and freelancers.
  • Serve as a public voice for projects, from initial acquisition meetings through sales presentations.
  • Participate in brainstorming meetings and share ideas for books, stationery, and other related products.
  • Act as project editor on titles acquired by Publisher and Senior Editor.
  • Serve as an in-house advocate for the views of authors, and a diplomatic representative of the publishing house when communicating with authors and their literary agents.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: The successful candidate will:
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communications skills, including comfort speaking publicly.
  • Have 5+ years' editorial experience in book, magazine, or digital publishing. Experience in complex, four-color illustrated books or other content-rich media spaces will be considered a plus.
  • Have a well-developed understanding of the acquisition process.
  • Be highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Embrace all aspects of the creative process, including brainstorming, editorial development, and determining a design/physical package.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and professionalism when interacting with authors and their literary agents, licensors, and colleagues within Running Press and Hachette.
  • Be comfortable coordinating team projects that will include designers, writers/authors, and freelancers.
  • Be proficient in Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel or other like tools, and have a strong understanding of line editing, the Chicago Manual of Style or other style guides, and the book publishing process, with understanding of the illustrated book process considered a plus.

The location of this position can be based in either our New York or Philadelphia offices. The compensation range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including office location, skills, and experience - talk with your recruiter to learn more.
