Job Title: Electric Furnace Operator (Melter)

Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin Maynard Steel Casting Company produces state-of-the-art technology, technical experience, craftsmanship, and a strong tradition of family pride in producing high-quality castings. Maynard Steel Foundry has been manufacturing steel castings since 1913. The Electric Furnace Operator (Melter) will be responsible for operating and maintaining electric arc or other furnaces to melt metal and alloys according to specific procedures and ranges for subsequent pouring into castings. This individual will start and regulate electrical controls to maintain power input to accomplish prescribed rates of melting and temperature. This role will require you to take a final analysis report on equipment malfunctions and perform preventative maintenance.
Duties & Responsibilities: - Inspect refractory lining before start-up and in between heats. Applies patch and refractory coatings as needed
- Assures the furnace is charged with the prescribed proportions of scrap alloys and other additions.
- Installs and adjusts carbon electrodes.
- Utilizes oxygen lance to enhance meltdown
- Monitors slag levels and conditions, adding flux as needed and removing slag when required.
- Uses an oxygen lance to blow down carbon levels.
- Check the temperature with pyrometers, take samples with a spoon or sampler tubes for alloy analysis and respond to lab feedback, accordingly, adding alloy, etc.
- Operates furnace tilt control to tap into ladle
- Assists in training backup furnace operators.
- Drives forklift to restock supplies.
Physical Demand: Extensive use of heavy bags of material, or shovel fulls needed to be thrown 10-15 feet and sometimes above head heights. Frequent use of wheelbarrow loads moved from alloy bins to furnace. Load hoppers of refractory spray with heavy bags of material. Needs to hold a heavy 4” hose, pull and drag for 20' lengths, and hold against back force.
