Electronics Installation and Fabrication Technologist

The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is hiring an Electronics Installation and Fabrication Technologist for the ATLAS project. The role involves fabricating, assembling, and ensuring quality of silicon-based particle tracking detector modules for collider experiments, to be integrated into general-purpose detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

What You Will Do:

  • Provide advanced technical support for electronics fabrication in a cleanroom environment.
  • Fabricate electronics hardware, including mounting integrated circuits.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate complex electronic and electro-mechanical circuits, applying technical expertise to commercial and custom-built systems.
  • Use precision tools for hybrid circuit board loading.
  • Ensure accuracy and quality by applying precise measurement techniques, calibrating instruments, and verifying product tolerances.
  • What is Required:

    Electronics Installation and Fabrication Technologist Level 2:

  • 2-4 years of experience in electronics fabrication for hardware, systems, and development.
  • Strong understanding of electronics fabrication, installation techniques, codes, and quality standards.
  • Experience in fabricating and installing a wide range of electronic hardware and systems.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient with hand, power, and machine tools.
  • Skilled in performing measurements and calculations.
  • Able to read and interpret schematics, sketches, parts lists, and component diagrams.
  • Color vision to distinguish wiring and component codes, as well as safety indicators.
  • Capable of climbing stairs and lifting up to 23 kg (50 lbs.).
  • In Addition to the Above, Electronics Installation and Fabrication Technologist Level 3:

  • 4-6 years of experience in electronics fabrication for hardware, systems, and development.
  • Desired Qualifications:

  • High school or trade school courses in tool usage, schematic reading, and AC/DC circuit theory.
  • Basic electronics documentation skills.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace, databases, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Electronics Installation and Fabrication Technologist Level 2:

    The hourly range for this position is $34.36 - $49.83. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

    Electronics Installation and Fabrication Technologist Level 3:

    The hourly range for this position is $41.77 - $60.55. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

    Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position.
  • As a condition of employment, the finalist will be required to disclose if they are subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct.
