JOB SUMMARY

The Emergency Department Technician collects patient information and provides direct patient care, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in accordance with the patient/family plan of care. The individual is responsible and accountable for complete and accurate data collection and recording, completion of routine and delegated direct care activities and communicating and collaborating with the Registered Nurse to prioritize workload to achieve the patient care outcomes desired.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Provides direct care support and technical assistance to the Registered Nurse (RN) to allow the RN to focus primarily on care planning and coordination.

2. Collaborates with the Registered Nurse (RN) to establish mutual care priorities on a shift-by-shift basis to achieve desired outcomes.

3. Completes routine and delegated assignments on time and seeks assistance from the RN when workload demands cannot be accomplished on assigned shift to ensure correct prioritization and completion of care needs.

4. Collaborates with the RN while completing focused technical skills and procedures to support therapeutic or diagnostic interventions necessary.

5. Assists the patient and family to complete activities of daily living including anticipating the patient's needs and modifying the approach based on plan of care, patient condition, patient age and development, and patient request.

6. Assists nurses and physicians with special procedures performed in the department in accordance with defined standards to aid in the care and safety of our patients.

7. Assist in the delegated tasks with phlebotomy.

8. Applies safety measures and provides age-appropriate patient care to continually support the comfort and satisfaction and safety of patients, families and staff.

9. Independently takes steps to verify variances in objective data (e.g. rechecks vitals, weights).

10. Collects data, offers input or actively participates on project teams to assist with process improvement activities positively impacting job performance, team productivity and role efficiency.

11. Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.

12. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Completion of a Nursing Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Medical Assistant program with certification or Medical Assistant program.

Preferred/Optional: None

EXPERIENCE

Minimum Required: None

Preferred/Optional: One year experience providing direct patient care

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

Minimum Required: Must have an active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and license awarded by the State of Wisconsin or Graduate of a Medical Assistant program with certification and license awarded by the State of Wisconsin. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.

Preferred/Optional: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.
