We are seeking an Energy Engineer for a 5 month paid externship opportunity.
This program is for Washington, DC residents only.
Must show proof of residency.
The solar field engineer will be responsible for designing PV systems for small to medium photo fall TA facilities with system sizes ranging from 5K W to one MW. Applications will vary across rooftop, greenfield, canopy solutions. The solar field engineer must be a strong communications detail oriented With a strong knowledge of basis on electrical and multiple power distribution voltage.
Duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Perform site survey and analysis to identify the constraints of a site to minimize project risk and opportunity cost
- Create solar design based on appropriate system application, Ari value engineering tools for residential commercial projects
- Design monitoring systems
- Create system proposals, designs, and prepare accurate system-per-performance calculations
- Synthesize all necessary information to develop cost-effective and readily deployable PV designs
- Understand and utilize BOS components
- Accurately model, PV facility, energy output, and estimates using PVSYST software and other acceptable, modeling tools
- Generate system specifications, and prepare bid documents
- Collaborate with the solar project manager and team leads to ensure that the design achieves the goals and timelines of the project
- Generates system specifications and collaborates with project manager and sales team
- Complete job site visits as required to evaluate the site conditions, electrical titans, and other items that will impact constructability
- Troubleshoot design and construction issues in the field
- Interact with customers, engineers, and project managers on a project-by-project basis to provide clarifications and details on layouts
- Perform electrical and energy consumption analysis and utility structure analysis
- Prepare accurate system performance calculations
- Research current and new designs, standards, codes, and methods of construction to assist in developing and improving design tools and systems
- Coordinate with other design, disciplines and consultants internally and externally
Required skills
- Must have a thorough understanding of Microsoft Office, Adobe, AutoCAD, and Aurora
- Must have knowledge of national electrical code

- Must have an electrical or mechanical engineering 4-year degree
