POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Energy Project Analyst will conduct BESS and PV + BESS revenue forecast and financial analysis using both in-house and external software and Excel tools. The revenue forecast and financial analysis will focus on distributed connected and Behind-the-meter (BTM) projects. In addition to conducting analysis, you will also spend time researching the market and understanding new revenues, incentives, and programs available. The goal is to have you serve as a market knowledge expert within the DE team. You will also incorporate your market research into in-house software development by building and maintaining the Excel templates and providing inputs to our software development team.

This role requires a deep understanding of the electricity market and more specifically how energy storage can provide and generate values in the electricity market. This position will interact with and synthesize information from various teams, including Software, Solution Sales, Project Development, and Asset Management. This position seeks highly motivated individuals that enjoy working in a small dynamic team environment, with a passion for clean energy and maximizing BESS values for society.

This position will report to the Senior Manager of Grid Services, or other senior management that the Senior Director of Product & Services, Vice President and/or Senior Vice President of the Company may designate. This position will be based in San Francisco, CA office (or remote), and travel up to 15% may be required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct Front-of-the-meter (FTM), Distributed Connected, and BTM BESS and PV + BESS revenue forecast on various use cases and jurisdictions. Various revenue streams include revenues from wholesale energy, capacity, ancillary services, federal and state incentives, and BTM utility programs.
• Research and select appropriate value streams given project characteristics.
• Determine appropriate assumptions for capital expenditure (CapEx), operation expenditure (OpEx), and other financial parameters including tax and discount rates with inputs from various teams.
• Conduct lifetime financial cash-flow modeling for BESS and PV + BESS and produce internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV), and other financial metrics to support solution sales and project development deals.
• Conduct sizing analysis and recommend preferable sizing given project characteristics.
• Perform modeling and simulation using both internal and external software.
• Review and understand energy storage dispatch and operation required for achieving the revenue streams.
• Document assumptions and inputs used for revenue forecast and financial analysis.
• Support the development and continuous improvement of in-house modeling tools and processes.
• Conduct research on new market programs and revenue streams.
• Support the development of internal- and external-facing presentations and technical content.
• Support enrollment of assets into grid service programs.
• Support M&V analysis and optimize operational assets for new grid service programs.
• Willing to travel up to 15% across the country.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree preferably in engineering, economics, finance, environmental science, or a stats-intensive field.
• Minimum of five (5) years of relevant academic work in modeling and simulation of energy storage and/or solar plus storage systems, or other types of power systems.
• Understanding of electricity markets, financial models, tariff structures, renewable incentives, energy storage, and renewable energy.
• Hands-on experience in renewable energy project finance is a plus.
• Strong analytical capability; high proficiency in Microsoft Excel; additional programming skills like Python and large-data processing is a plus.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• A passion for the energy industry and willingness to learn and adapt in this rapidly growing industry.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A Master‘s in the above disciplines is preferred.
