We strive to ensure that all graduates realize their potential through hard work and an exceptional education that is unimpeded by irrational self-doubt or societal biases.The Student Success Center English Language Learning Tutor will work with individuals and small groups of students in specific courses or in academic skill areas (e.g. reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, etc.). Tutors may work directly with particular instructors as well, offering support to a class as a whole or to individuals needing extra help to keep up and excel. In addition to direct contact with students, ESL or ELL tutors are expected to complete and maintain tutor records as directed and to maintain the confidentiality of all student-related information. On-going participation in tutor training sessions is necessary for continued employment with the ELL Tutor Program. Tutors may also be asked to complete work-related projects as requested by their supervisor.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead ELL tutoring sessions to help participants develop the skills required.
  • Coordinates daily homework assistance and tutoring programs for students.
  • Assist in the creation of learning activities and other department objectives.
  • Complete tutorial log daily and complete monthly reports.
  • Monitor the use of tutoring resources (laptops, calculators, books, etc.) during tutoring sessions.
  • Design, develop and implement tutoring programs for SSC Summer Program, Fall, and Spring semesters.
Qualifications
  • Hold a NJ Instructional and/or a second language certificate in accordance with the state requirements
  • Degree in English Language, English Literature or similar field
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Previous experience as an ESL teacher or similar role
  • Knowledge of various methods of teaching English to non-native speakers
  • Knowledge of successful strategies for tutoring a diverse student population.
  • Proven ability to communicate ideas, principles, and concepts effectively in individual or small group settings.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the students.
  • Previous teaching or tutoring experience is required.
