The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving 21,000+ students Pre-K-12 of whom 77% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 18% are served by the Office of Special Education and 78% are students of color.JOB DESCRIPTION:The ENL Humanitarian Liaison will support the work of the Department of ENL, World Languages, and Bilingual Education in building and expanding capacity to meet the needs of ENL students and newly arriving refugee and immigrant families. The goal is to comprehensively assess and address the needs of school-aged refugee and immigrant children and their parents, approaching student support from an academic, social emotional, physical, and mental health lens. The ENL Humanitarian liaison will work closely with SCSD refugee and immigrant students, with particular emphasis on new arrivals, on social emotional health and wellness initiatives. This liaison will provide SCSD staff with trauma-informed practices for refugee and immigrant students and families and conduct other relevant staff training and orientation. They will develop and provide social emotional learning opportunities for eligible ENL students and parents. This role will serve as a liaison between ENL families, school staff, and the community.REPORTS TO: Director of ENL, World Languages and Bilingual EducationDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as a resource for SCSD staff seeking clarification around refugee resettlement and trauma-informed practices
  • Develop and deliver professional development to school staff and SCSD families on relevant ENL/SEL topics
  • Collaborate with community-wide resettlement supports to stay up-to-date on available resources, mental health and wellness related needs and concerns, and relevant initiatives
  • Collaborate with appropriate school-based support personnel to develop and implement plans for students and families facing particular concerns with adjustment to US schools
  • Assess and address unique needs of newly arriving refugee families such as: physical needs, mental health and wellness supports, intensive case management, etc.
  • Complete any additional duties as assigned by the Director of ENL, World Languages and Bilingual Education
ENL Humanitarian LiaisonKNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING:
  • Strong record of helping ELL students achieve academic success
  • Significant experience with ELL family engagement
  • Ability to effectively research, identify and secure resources to enhance the quality of service for ELLs and their families
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to the SCSD mission and willingness to serve the SCSD community
  • Experience in providing high-quality professional development
  • Experience with building and maintaining culturally responsive learning environments that celebrate the diversity of the student population
  • Ability to model positive and healthy character traits and habits, such as being organized, consistent and understanding
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit; be flexible and be willing to go above and beyond to meet the varied and constant needs of the students of the SCSD
  • Excellent organizational, communication and facilitation skills
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire.
  • Training and/or experience with Culturally Relevant Education preferred
  • The successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, at the cost of $101.75 to the candidate.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • All candidates must meet the requirements as set by the New York State Department of Education for Social Worker
  • Ability to work beyond the ten-month school year and student day
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in a school social work setting
  • Preferred: experience working with refugee and immigrant families in Syracuse, knowledge of trauma-informed best practices specific to refugee experiences
  • Preferred: knowledge of and experience with special education
SALARY/SALARY RANGE:This position will earn a starting salary of $53,000 for SCSD Teachers. With proof of outside, related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement. Job Description View Attachment
