Position Description:

Reports To: Principal Engineer and Scientist

Status: Regular full-time

Position summary:

We are seeking a motivated entry- to mid-level engineer to support planning, design, and implementation of river, floodplain, and wetland restoration projects in tidal and fluvial environments. You will be responsible for supporting project managers and engineers in engineering tasks including topographic survey, drafting, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, engineering calculations, and construction observation. This position has opportunities for career growth and development, including progression towards project management and licensure.

Our offices in Santa Cruz, California, and Portland, Oregon, strategically position us to serve clients across California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada. Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist project managers with the following tasks:
    • Topographic survey and map development,
    • Preparation of quantity estimates and cost estimates,
    • Preparation of calculations, reports, and permit application support,
    • Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, and
    • Construction staking, observation, and post-construction monitoring.

• Track billable hours, miles traveled, reimbursable expenses, and purchases.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience with techniques and principles of riverine and wetland habitat restoration.
  • Experience collecting and evaluating ground and surface water information.
  • Experience with topographic surveying.
  • Experience with drafting and plan production (Civil 3D).
  • Experience with geospatial analysis and map production (ArcGIS Pro or QGIS).
  • Experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling (HEC suite).
  • Experience with construction.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with coworkers.
  • Proficiency in written and oral communication.
  • Ability to work effectively alone and in a collaborative environment.

Education/Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in civil engineering (or related field).
  • Water resources internship, relevant research project, or relevant position.

Special Requirements:

Working Conditions:

Waterways will provide reasonable accommodations to individuals to be able to perform their work. We work in the field year-round, with more intensive field work during the in-water work period for construction (July-September). Field work is performed outdoors, in inclement weather, and around potentially dangerous construction equipment. Some projects are in remote and rugged terrain with limited to no cell phone service. Candidate is expected to be capable of walking on rough terrain and in small creeks and rivers with survey gear. Overnight travel may be required.
