Under general supervision, develops, implements, and maintains environmental, health, and safety programs in support of the University's mission and in compliance with university policies and procedures along with state and federal regulations and standards to ensure the environmental health and safety of students, employees, and visitors. Works in coordination with the campus community while providing guidance and consultation to university personnel regarding environmental issues including but not limited to: asbestos material management, indoor air quality, hazardous material response, above/underground storage tanks, hazardous waste, and lead.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and experience that equates to four years.
Experience in an environmental or project management role.
Experience in the interpretation and application of state and federal regulations.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, including experience with group presentations.
Demonstrated computer experience with business software applications, including MS Word, Excel and/or SharePoint.
Ability to work varied hours depending on campus activities, training schedules, and project timelines.
Demonstrated ability to work on a team, build rapport, communicate effectively, and project a positive image.
Ability to pass a HAZMAT medical examination and be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection devices.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree, preferably in environmental health and safety, public health, chemistry, or biology.
State of Michigan accredited asbestos building inspector.
State of Michigan accredited asbestos contractor supervisor.
OSHA HAZWOPER Technician training.
Two years' experience directly overseeing contractors.
Experience working in a higher education environment.
American Red Cross First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) & Automated External Defibrillator (AED)trainer.
Knowledge of federal & state environmental health & safety regulations.
Experienced in the operation of health and safety monitoring/testing equipment including but not limited to gas monitors, indoor air quality equipment and personal protective equipment.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assists with University compliance with applicable local, state and federal environmental regulations, including, MIOSHA, EGLE, EPA and DOT.
Monitors developing environmental federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and risk initiatives; analyze potential impacts on University operations.
Coordinates the University's asbestos management program which includes: contractor and consultant oversight and scheduling, budget management, maintenance of building inspection reports, and materials sampling and analysis.
Administers and develops written environmental programs as well as develops & conducts training required under MIOSHA and EGLE.
Provides technical support to the University on environmental matters.
Coordinates activities with other campus environmental, health and safety officials.
Supervises contractors, consultants, and student employees.
Supervises budgets as assigned.
Responds to hazardous materials releases on campus. Assists in/or abates the release.
Assists on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) assessments.
Under general supervision interacts with external parties including EGLE, MDEQ, and EPA regarding environmental compliance matters.
Develops and conducts training programs in areas of Risk Management, Environmental Health & Safety including but not limited to, first aid/CPR/AED, asbestos awareness, hazard communication, lead, poly-chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other topics as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned.
