Salary Range: B23($22.88 - $27.82/hourly)/B24($24.57 - $29.86/hourly)/B25($26.60 - $32.32) Non-exempt* salary commensurate with experiencePosition Summary:Under the direction of an Environmental Health Supervisor, the Environmental Health Specialist in Training (EHSIT) or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) is responsible for the implementation of environmental health programs. Conducts inspections and investigations to ensure businesses and residents are operating in compliance with state regulations, and in a manner that protects the public's health and the environment.Responsibilities include but not limited to:Conducts inspections of food operations, public swimming pools, schools, transient accommodations, smoke free workplace programs, and other public or semi-public facilities; Prepares reports which determine compliance with state and local codes and regulationsConducts field tests and/or collects various samples as assignedConducts complaint inspections for program operations; Investigates complaints concerning foodborne illness as neededMaintains accurate files, data processing and other office records; May assist in preparation of legal or administrative documentsWorks with various state, county, and municipal governments and community groups to promote improved environmental health practices; Conducts educational presentations, including Person in Charge Food Safety TrainingMinimum Qualifications:Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Health or degree in the Physical, Natural, or Biological SciencesEHSIT/B23: Meet all educational requirements set forth by ORC 3776 and OAC 4736 and required to obtain REHS I status within five years.REHS I/B24: Passing the REHS exam and one year experience as an EHSIT, if having an accredited Environmental Health Bachelor's Degree with internship; or a Master's Degree; or two to five years' experience as an EHSIT.REHS II/B25: Five years' experience as a REHS I.Understands and acknowledges that Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County uses evidence-based and evidence-informed public health practices based on scientific research including health promotion theory and practice, environmental health measures, and communicable disease control measures including vaccination, isolation, and quarantine practices, and medicine for treatment and prevention of disease, among others.Understands and acknowledges the use of tobacco or nicotine products in any form including replacement therapy products and prescription medications used to treat smoking addiction for anyone hired after January 1, 2014, is prohibitedRequired to play an active role during a public health emergency, crisis, outbreak, incident, or event in which the Health Commissioner deems additional personnel resources are warranted.
