Environmental Programs Coordinator

ABOUT THIS POSITION:

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $69,725.00 - 85,414.00

WORK LOCATION: Mason Street Municipal Building, 322 N. Mason St, Apex, NC 27502 USA

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm

POSTING CLOSING DATE: November 18, 2025 at 7pm

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

Performs complex work launching the Environmental Programs Team, strategizing Town environmental goals and plans, and developing full project initiatives that align with Town Council and resident priorities for the Town operations as a whole and the community at large.

This position reports to the Planning Director. Requires little or no direction on work subject only to policy or strategic guidance.

This position does not supervise.

A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:

* Builds a management structure for the Environmental Programs Team made up of various environmental-related positions across multiple departments and citizen committees.

* Works with the Town Forester, Water Resources stormwater staff, Sustainability Coordinator, Emergency Management Coordinator, Current Planning Manager, and other staff to ensure policy, programmatic, and educational initiatives are aligned across the organization and implemented in a coordinated way.

* Guides the Town's environmental efforts and coordinate the work of the Environmental Advisory Board, TreeCAP, and Bee City Committee.

* Serves as the staff liaison to the Environmental Advisory Board and coordinates with Board members, other Town staff, development community representatives, guest speakers, and residents.

* Cultivates community engagement through facilitating opportunities for connection through the Environmental Advisory Board, TreeCAP, and Bee City Committee.

* Participates in community-wide events, including the Town's Earth Day event, Apex EarthFest.

* Implements the Trees and Sustainability Plan, Hazard Mitigation Plan, and other Town Council directed initiatives.

* Develops analysis report and strategic projects to implement Town-wide initiatives towards achieving the Town's short- and long-range environmental goals.

* Mobilizes and supports initiatives driven by other Town departments and multi-departmental environmental efforts.

* Reviews policy changes and actively engages in tactics that drive the success of the Apex Environmental Programs.

* Researches, applies, and serves as Project Manager for grants that benefit the funding of Town-driven Environmental initiatives.

* Participates in regional workgroups and networks throughout North Carolina and the Southeast to positively influence and contribute to the evolving environmental field.

* Mentors the Environmental Programs Team to support growth within the various Environmental Programs by way of monthly meetings, trainings, and general leadership.

* Seeks growth opportunities in both education and experience that will enhance performance in leading the Environmental Programs Team, including through coursework, trainings, webinars, and workshops.

* Performs related tasks as required.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Position requires a Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience (considerable), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid state-issued Class C driver's license or ability to obtain within 6 months.

WHAT WOULD SET YOU APART:

Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) preferred.
