The Strong welcomes hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of guests each day as one of the most popular attractions in upstate New York. The lead environmental specialist is responsible for various janitorial duties to help maintain an attractive, clean, and welcoming environment for our guests. This role participates in general cleaning and maintenance, the set-up and take-down of museum events, and in producing a positive image of the museum.
This position requires a strong work ethic and attention to detail.
This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position with a 37.5 hour per week schedule.
Essential Duties:
+ Adhering to the museum's philosophy of outstanding guest service, maintain an appropriate relationship with museum staff and guests while fostering a positive image of the museum.
+ Report to work on time, as scheduled.
+ Wear a clean and proper uniform.
+ Wear required PPE (personal protective equipment) to prevent or minimize exposure hazards such as: Biological, Chemical and Physical hazards. Examples: gloves, clothing and eye protection.
+ Successfully perform assigned duties using job cards and accurately complete related documentation.
+ Maintain cleanliness of museum according to museum standards, including, but not limited to: vacuuming assigned areas; cleaning furniture, walls, carpets, baseboards, glass, plexi, and handrails throughout the museum; collecting and disposing of all trash; cleaning and supplying restrooms; and mopping, stripping and waxing floors as assigned.
+ Operate equipment such as, but not limited to: carpet extractor and floor buffer.
+ Respond to radio calls for various cleaning requests. Clean areas following spills or bodily functions that occur inside the building or on museum grounds.
+ Move heavy furniture, equipment, or supplies.
+ Provide a workplace free from serious recognized hazards and comply with standards, rules and regulations issued under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). Examine workplace conditions to make sure they conform to applicable OSHA standards.
+ Follow operating procedures to uphold safety and health requirements. Have access to and use safe tools and equipment, and properly maintain this equipment.
+ Assist in the setup and takedown of food and beverage service, facility rentals, museum events, and public programs activities, including the setup, arrangement, or movement of chairs and tables, as assigned.
+ Utilize the Facilities helpdesk to report on the need for facility repairs outside the purview of the environmental services team.
+ Provides required training for staff as needed and follow-up training for the team as required.
+ Assist Supervisor with job assignments for daily tasks and call-in coverage.
+ Assist Supervisor in modification of job cards and assignments.
+ Perform follow up inspections on completed job cards and assignments. Report findings to Facilities Supervisor as needed.
+ Attend and participate in environmental services team meetings and other meetings, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ High school diploma, GED or CDOS; must be 18 years of age.
+ This position regularly requires full range of mobility in upper and lower body; the ability to reach overhead; the ability to work in various positions, including stooping, standing, walking, bending over, sitting, kneeling, and squatting for extended periods of time; the use or operation of objects, tools or controls; the ability to climb three flights of stairs; and the ability to talk, hear, and smell. This position frequently requires the ability to lift, pull, push, and carry weight up to 50 pounds to complete assigned job tasks.
+ Specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus are important for this role.
+ While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to operate equipment, as needed, such as carpet cleaners, wet-dry vacs, floor buffers, and floor cleaners.
+ Experience in a janitorial, housekeeping, custodial, customer service, or related position.
+ Must be dependable, possess a strong work ethic, and be willing to learn.
+ Ability to positively interact with museum guests and team members.
+ Ability to communicate both orally and in writing, understand and follow standard operating procedures and to exercise sound judgment in decision-making.
