Position DescriptionPerforms repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.Essential Duties:
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
- Assists with surveying-related work.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
- Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
- Operates light and heavy equipment.
- Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
- Oversees the work of designated maintenance technicians and sign technicians.
- Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems, presenting operational updates to the supervisor, providing input on team members' career conversations, and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Performs all other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:Experience: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
- Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class A CDL, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.
- Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed, if performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.

Competencies:
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
- Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
- Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications
- Using computers and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel and Word (2&3)
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics
- Ability to follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmission repair
- Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems
- Brake repairs to include antilocking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems
- Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to noise
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
