Position Summary Information

Position Purpose

This is a full-time temporary, one-year appointment.

The incumbent performs skilled work in the operation of trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more, specialized construction and maintenance equipment, and buses with capacity of fifteen or more passengers. Performs equipment maintenance duties and related work of both skilled and unskilled nature.

This position is considered an essential personnel position.

Description of Duties

* Operates buses and vans with a capacity of fifteen or more passengers to transport students, faculty, staff, and the general public to various locations and destinations both on and off campus.

* Operates truck-mounted snowplows during snow removal and cinder spreaders during cindering operations.

* Operates trucks hauling stone, slag, asphalt, earth or other materials and construction and maintenance equipment such as large snow plows, and snow blowers, graders, cinder spreaders, and large rollers on operation requiring the compaction of earth, stone, asphalt or stabilization materials.

* Operates trucks and light construction and maintenance equipment such as large grass and brush mowing machines, rollers, tractors, sprinklers, bulldozers, and front-end loaders and forklifts.

* Operates large, specialized, or heavy-duty equipment such as a backhoe and front-end loader.

* Assists automotive mechanic in making major repairs to equipment.

* Makes minor adjustments and repairs to equipment; performs preventative maintenance work on equipment; cleans and services equipment; maintains equipment operation records.

* Performs manual work on assigned projects when not operating equipment; loads, sets up and removes various kinds of equipment utilized in classrooms, picnics, conferences, offices and other University functions.

* Participates in education workshops and training seminars as requested or mandated by Pennsylvania law.

* Practices safety measures to prevent accidents and injuries, and to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

* The incumbent may be required to receive training in, and perform, other trade related work. This trade related work may include assignments outside the Transportation Department for periods of up to four months.

Minimum Requirements Profile

One year of experience as an Equipment Operator A;

OR

Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment used at this level with a gross weight of 32,001 pounds or more;

OR

an equivalent combination of experience and training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

* Possession of a class A or B commercial driver's license issued from Pennsylvania within 30 days of hire.

* Possession of a P or S driver's license endorsement issued from Pennsylvania within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications Applicant Rating Criteria Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Knowledge of the practices applied to the care and safe operation of trucks with gross vehicle weight of 32,001 or more, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

* Knowledge of the principles of operation of motor equipment sufficient to detect defective operation and to learn to make minor repairs.

* Knowledge of the state laws pertaining to the operation of equipment upon highways.

* Ability to operate specialized equipment safely and in accordance with established procedures.

* Ability to service, make running adjustments, and minor repairs to the equipment.

* Knowledge of hand tools used in construction and maintenance.

* Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

* Ability to maintain simple clerical records.

* Sufficient physical strength to lift heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions.

Background Clearances

Offers of employment are conditional, pending successful completion of the background clearances mandated by Act 153 of 2014 and Board of Governors Policy 2014-01-A: Protection of Minors. In order to qualify for a provisional appointment, the Applicant Acknowledgement Consent Form, Provisional Hire Form, Pennsylvania State Police and Justifacts portion of the clearance process must be successfully completed prior to your start date. The remaining PA Child Abuse History Clearance and FBI Clearance must be successfully completed and returned as soon as possible within the first 90 days of employment.
