Salary: $23.84 - $30.65 HourlyLocation : South Milwaukee, WIJob Type: Full-timeJob Number: 24-25Department: Street DepartmentOpening Date: 10/18/2024Closing Date: 11/10/2024 11:59 PM CentralJob Description The City of South Milwaukee is seeking energetic, positive, and reliable people who enjoy working outdoors and want to contribute to our community's safety and beauty through a variety of work.POSITION SUMMARY:Under general supervision and direction of the Street Superintendent and Street Department Leadership Team, the Equipment Operator I performs a variety of laboring work, including clearing snow and debris, tree removal and chipping, repair of roads and sidewalks, trash collection, and a variety of other semi-skilled labor intensive tasks.This position qualifies as emergency personnel as permitted by Wis. Stat. Sec. 66.0502. Duties/Responsibilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operates vehicles and equipment including trucks, skid steer, lawnmower, pavement roller, concrete saw, pressure washer, brush chipper, tar kettle, and various other pieces of heavy and light equipment.
  • Maintains equipment and performs pre-trip inspections on vehicles and equipment.
  • Operates self-deposit station as assigned.
  • Cuts grass and maintains city owned properties.
  • Trims, cuts, removes, and plants trees.
  • Operates wood chipper for disposal of branches and logs.
  • Crack seals roads and alleys.
  • Picks up and collects solid waste; transfers waste to landfill.
  • Cleans, maintains, and makes minor adjustments and repairs to vehicles and equipment.
  • Plows snow and salts roads in inclement weather.
  • Sets up and maintains safe working environments within the street right of way.
  • Maintains roads, sidewalks, and curbs and makes repairs using asphalt or concrete.
  • Saws and removes asphalt and concrete for repair or replacement.
  • Prepares work areas for materials, including stone, asphalt, millings, or concrete.
  • Set forms; pours and finishes concrete; shovels and rolls asphalt.
  • Performs general building maintenance and repairs.
  • Performs labor intensive tasks such as shoveling, air hammer operation, and concrete excavation.
  • Prepares records related to tasks performed.
  • Assists other departments with repairs related to water main breaks, sewer failures, etc.
  • Trains new regular and temporary employees.
  • Responds to emergencies and after hours call-in assignments.
  • Performs storm clean up and emergency service as requested.
  • Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
  • All other related work as required.
Other DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years recent construction or commercial driving experience.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License required.
  • Must obtain valid Commercial Driver's License with Tank Vehicle Endorsement within three months of hire date.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of safe and efficient operation and ability to operate conventional and specialized large and small vehicles and mechanical equipment typically used in a municipal public works department.
  • Knowledge of construction and building maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of occupational and safety hazards and precautions necessary in the work place.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematic calculations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other city employees, elected officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to provide truthful and accurate written and verbal communications.
