The Common Good is a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501c3 organization that provides the dynamic exchange of ideas and promotes civil and informed discourse on major public policy issues across the political spectrum. Our mission is to make our democracy work better with government that is more responsive to the needs of the people. We encourage leaders and citizens to work together to solve our urgent problems and mitigate the division that threatens our nation. TCG has offered hundreds of events and programs, film screenings, and informational travel with top thought leaders to thousands of audience participants. TCG is a membership-based organization.

Job Summary

The Executive Director (ED) will oversee staff operations for The Common Good to produce quality programs, execute its mission, expand the audience and membership, and increase fundraising. The ideal applicant will have demonstrated experience in staff and organization management; good writing, speaking and fundraising skills; and experience in public policy in domestic or international affairs with applicable NGO, government, or business, and/or in election campaigns, media or journalism fields.

Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership & Management
  • Manage the work of the organization including executing and producing events and projects around the calendar year (at least 18-24 per year in-person or on Zoom), including our annual Awards event, the TCG National Survey on Division, America's Report Card, and other projects and initiatives.
  • Manage the research and writing of materials for use in producing events and projects. Set up and track assignments & tasks for Program Managers and interns and the projects the ED takes on him/herself.
  • Ability to graciously and intelligently engage top leaders, thinkers, journalists, and activists.
  • Actively engage and energize The Common Good staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Grow revenue from donations and memberships - developing growth and retention of members and donors, with a view to generating greater revenue and creating community.
  • Oversee messaging and communications strategy and implementation, from web presence, email, and social media to external relations, with the goal of creating a stronger brand and message; and help develop timelines and resources needed to achieve the goals.
  • Oversee efficient information and office management, update or create training manuals and policies for staff and interns, help oversee expenses and revenue and keep the organization and its programs on budget.
  • We are seeking a candidate who is action-oriented, entrepreneurial and self-directed, adaptable, mission-driven, with high integrity, a positive attitude, a relatable personality, and a willingness to roll-up sleeves and be very hands-on.
  • Requirements

  • Must be very knowledgeable about U.S. politics, current events, public policy, and international affairs.
  • Bachelors or Masters required with at least 3-5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong communicator, both in writing and orally. Strong research and writing ability.
  • Ability to manage a team, set and achieve strategic objectives, and stay on budget.
  • Marketing, communications, or public relations experience is a plus.
  • Commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
  • Some evenings (usually one per month) will be required to oversee programs that take place after regular work hours.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Docs, spreadsheets, presentations, and programs such as Constant Contact, Eventbrite, MembershipWorks, Quickbooks, or the website platform Squarespace are a big plus. Knowledge of social media platforms and strategies is a big plus.
  • This position is open for immediate hire.

    Salary offered: $175,000-$200,000 per annum.

    We currently work 3 days in the office and two days from home each week.

    Our offices are light and airy and set in the financial district in NYC, extremely close to the subway and major public transportation hubs.
