Facing History & Ourselves is a global education non-profit organization that challenges teachers and students to use lessons of history to stand up to bigotry and hate.
Facing History seeks an experienced and dynamic Executive Director (ED) who can lead our efforts to increase our presence and philanthropic support in Ohio and open new markets in surrounding states, building on the momentum and opportunities we have created in our Ohio region.
More specifically, the ED is responsible for delivering on Ohio fundraising and generating district leads which can lead to contracts with school districts and similar entities. This leader is also charged with increasing regional visibility with education policy leaders and others, and for supporting program growth and delivery goals in partnership with the Ohio Program Director. Finally, as this person leads the drive to amplify Facing Historys district partnerships and community visibility in Ohio, the ED also needs to begin to drive earned income, raise philanthropic support, and enhance community awareness in markets in surrounding states.
This position reports to the Managing Director, US Regions, and partners with the executive team to implement all strategies, policies, and processes at the regional level. The ED supervises the Director of Development, matrix manages all regional employees,and is responsible for working with the regional advisory board to maintain a strong regional culture.
Specific Responsibilities in Strategy, Leadership and Management Include
Fundraising
* Creates the overall regional fundraising strategy and goals and works closely with the Ohio Director of Development to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of those goals.
* Creates a district-building strategy and revenue targets for earned income with school districts and similar entities with the global Chief Officer of Growth and Engagement and works closely with the Ohio Program Director to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of those goals. Responsible for generating district leads
* Grows a portfolio of donors across Ohio to serve as a regional anchor to expand the region beyond Ohio.
* Maintains a fundraising portfolio of principal gift-level funders, foundations, and corporations and works to ensure that they are connected to the work, understand the impact, and feel appreciated for their support
* Grows, maintains and strengthens the regional Advisory Board, to ensure the board partners effectively and efficiently with staff to meet or exceed revenue and outreach goals.
Regional Visibility, District Partnerships, and Community Outreach
* Communicates the organizational vision, themes, goals, and progress to staff, advisory board members, and key funders and aligns all regional activities to overall Facing History goals and strategies. Serve as the face of Facing History in the region
* Creates and cultivates relationships with key local, state and national education policy makers to grow Facing Historys presence in more districts and similar fee-for-service entities.
* In partnership with the Program Director, Coordinates work with local educational institutions (museums, etc.), community groups and other education organizations (Holocaust Education, Racial Equity, civics/SEL, teacher leadership/professional development) with the goal of increasing Facing History visibility and educator participation in programs.
* Reaches multiple educational audiences, including teachers, administrators Facing History students and student alumni and their parents.
* Raise the profile of the organization in the region through media relations, high profile public speaking engagements and other strategies developed in partnership with the marketing department.

* Ability to lead, inspire and develop staff, connecting daily work to Facing Historys mission and values
* Experience in fundraising and in working with staff and board to achieve fundraising goals (Minimum of 10+ years required in similar senior level role)
* Deep knowledge of the Ohio educational policy and school district landscapes and demonstrated success in working within those settings preferred
* Deep knowledge of the Ohio philanthropic landscape and demonstrated success running fundraising campaigns in the region, particularly for principal gifts
* Proven record of building reputation and extending awareness of a nonprofit across key sectors, leading to increased revenue, and demand for services.
* Excellent interpersonal skills to create, maintain and strengthen relationships with philanthropic partners including donors and board
* Experience in in a senior role in fundraising and in working with staff and board to achieve fundraising goals
* Direct supervision experience (5+ years preferred), particularly in project management and oversight that requires balancing multiple tasks and setting priorities
* Experience leading and growing teams in a hybrid or remote work community
* Experience working with a matrix management team
* Proven track record of creating and delivering effective presentations to diverse audiences
* Exceptional written and oral communications skills
* Ability to articulate Facing Historys work
* Technology proficiency required, especially with communication and fundraising tools, digital learning strategies and social media

Hybrid Work Model: Facing History & Ourselves operates in a hybrid work model, allowing staff flexibility in both schedules and work locations. Due to the necessity to meet in person with donors and local education leaders, this particular position is attached to the Facing History & Ourselves Center in Cleveland and requires in-person and in-office work on a regular basis. Some travel is required.
