We are pleased that you are interested in career opportunities offered at MICA.Job Title: Exhibition Specialist ( Casual/Part-time )Department: ExhibitionsFLSA Status: Non-ExemptReports to: Director, ExhibitionsGrade: 4Union: N/AHourly Range: $20.22 - $24.73Position summary: Handling, installation and de-installation of artworks and maintenance of MICA gallery spaces and storage areas.General purpose: On-Call Exhibition Specialists to supplement Exhibitions department's full-time staff of Preparators during installation and de-installation timesRole qualifications:
  • Assist Exhibition staff with exhibitions, galleries and storage areas
  • Ability to work long hours and on weekends, if needed
  • Ability to work with others in team environment
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide and varied clientele: students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to troubleshoot and effectively assist students with installation in high-pressure situations
  • Knowledge of current technical-based platforms and media
  • Knowledge of correct safety practices in art installation and the ability to effectively communicate these with the MICA community
  • Ability to work within tight deadlines
  • Ability to work under own direction
Position responsibilities:
  • Installation of a variety of art works, including 2D, 3D, technology based (LCD projections, sound installations etc)
  • Work with Exhibition staff to construct temporary walls in the galleries
  • Frequent moving and transportation of furniture and large installation objects and equipment
  • Safety and care of art objects in relation to packing and transportation
  • Working alongside MICA students in a gallery setting
  • Work with Exhibitions staff to mentor and teach art installation best practices to department work-study students
  • Work with Exhibitions staff to mentor and teach safety best practices to department work-study students
  • Safety and care of art objects in gallery and storage areas
  • Organization of tools
  • Sanding, spackling, and painting walls, pedestals and other gallery furniture as needed
  • General gallery lighting
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Essential skills and experience:
  • General tool experience: drills, hammers, levels, painting equipment
  • Use of ladders
  • Strong numeric reasoning preferred.
  • Previous gallery/art-handling experience required
  • Knowledge of technical-based installations (video, LCD projection, etc.)
Minimum qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Art handling or gallery/museum experience
  • Certifications/licenses: forklift and lift certification; ladder safety training
Preferred qualifications:
  • Own transportation
Reporting to this position: No direct reports.Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to wear a respirator
  • Work long hours, including evenings, and overtime as directed
  • On call for weekend duties as needed
Physical demands and work environment:
  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; climb; stoop; kneel; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; speak and hear. The employee must occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
  • Required training: Exhibitions Department Installation Guide and Policy handbook, MICA Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment.
