Purpose
TheExplorer Search and Rescue Unit ( supports theSnohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue ( mission ‘That others may live' by searching for and rescuing lost and injured people, while providing the training and experience necessary to make each individual a skilled and effective member of the Search and Rescue team.
Requirements
Membership is open to young people between the ages of 14 and 21, who are mature, have good character, and maintain the minimum requirements outlined by SCVSAR.
Applicants must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Felony convictions will be disqualifying. Misdemeanor and infraction convictions, depending upon the number and severity may be disqualifying.
Applications
All applicants will be required to complete an application and pass a background investigation. If under the age of 18, participants must obtain parent or guardian written authorization.
SAR Explorers have many opportunities to apply the training they receive. Qualified ESAR members can participate in many of the numerous SAR missions that occur each year. These missions will vary from urban searches for lost people with dementia or autism, crime scene evidence searches, rescues of lost or injured hikers in the wilderness, or any number of different possibilities.
Activities
Members will also be provided training in First Aid, CPR, Navigation, Wilderness Survival, Helicopter Operations, Swift Water Awareness, Crime Scene Awareness, Search Techniques, Radio Operation, GPS Use, and more. Mountaineers, swiftwater rescue technicians, Sheriff's deputies, climbers, and other experts with special skills will provide the training necessary for members to enhance their search and rescue abilities.
Members will attend the Search and Rescue Academy and Safety Summit hosted at the Snohomish County Search and Rescue base in Snohomish. Other available training may include:

4x4 Operation
ORV Operation
Swiftwater Training
Snow Travel
Winter Survival
Mock Searches
**ESAR members can earn the community service credits that many schools require for graduation.
***State law ( authorizes up to 5 excused absences from school per year in order for students to participate in Search and Rescue missions.
