The 1890 Extension Office invites resumes for a full-time, non-exempt, twelve month contractual Contingent II position with limited benefits. The position is located at the UMES Extension, UMES Research, Education, & Extension Farm, 10789 Stewart Neck Road Princess Anne, MD 21853.
Under the supervision of the Alternative Agriculture Specialist and Small Farm Program Coordinator, individual performs manual activities and support at the UMES Research, Education and Extension Farm.
Responsibilities
* Assist Extension Specialists & Small Farm Staff with field crop demonstrations and research (Ex: field preparation, planting, cultivating, application of fertilizers, harvesting, grading, weighing and recording data).
* Assist with greenhouse experiments, plant care, and general management of the greenhouse and high tunnels onsite.
* Assist in the general care and maintenance of the UMES Research, Education, & Extension farm
* Provide limited support to Small Farm Team working with neighboring farmers on collaborative research projects and on-farm demonstrations.
* Assist Specialists in developing educational materials and with farmer training activities.
* Perform minor repairs and general maintenance (upkeep) of farm equipment and implements
* Operates farm vehicles (tractors, farm truck) and general farm machinery including plows, sprayers, hand tools, etc.
* Assist Small Farm Team with organizing/setting up equipment and indoor/outdoor demonstration sites in preparation for annual agricultural events (Ag. Showcase, Small Farm Conference, etc).
* Performs other farm-related tasks as assigned.
Classification 45-0000 Farming, Fishing, and Forestry Occupations Required Qualifications
* High School Diploma or GED.
* Five years' experience performing a variety of duties in support of the teaching, demonstration, and advising work of Extension agents or in community outreach, health care, research, or social services programs.
* Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
* Bachelor degree.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
* General knowledge and use of computers (MS Office).
* Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
* Ability to tolerate strenuous physical activity in adverse weather conditions (occasionally).
* Ability to lift and transport agricultural supplies, tools, and equipment (up to 50lbs).
