The Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center is seeking BC/BE Pediatric, Family Medicine or Adolescent Medicine Physicians to provide primary care in one of our High School-Based Health Centers in Manhattan.

Description Job Title: School Based Health Center Attending Physician

Grade: Faculty

Reports to: School Based Health Center Program Medical Director, Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center

Primary Purpose:

The Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center (“MSAHC” or the “Center”) works to break down racial, social and economic barriers to health care and wellness for young people by providing vital services - high quality, comprehensive, integrated and confidential - for all who come to the Center or School Based health facilities, at no cost to them. The MSAHC advances adolescent health as a national imperative by serving as a leading center of clinical care, specialized training, innovative research and advocacy.

The School Based Health Center (“SBHC”) Attending Physician is responsible for preventive care visits as well as care for acute and chronic medical conditions, reproductive and sexual health, psychosocial screening, coordination of on-site operations, supervision of site medical assistant and participation in ongoing quality improvement activities. Applicants should have experience working with adolescents. This professional is responsible for providing and overseeing medical services and coordinating day to day operations, in collaboration with the School Based Health Center Administrative Practice Manager, in the care and treatment of patients. This professional will be charged with ensuring that the above functions are developed, managed and delivered within a culture that is youth-centric, high quality, integrated and collaborative as well as in accordance with Mount Sinai's policies and procedures, New York State regulations and guidelines, and funder expectations.

Responsibilities

A. Direct Patient Care: Outpatient setting.

  • Provide direct care to patients that is consistent with the goals and evidenced based standards established for the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, in accordance with safety regulations and protocols identified by Mount Sinai Hospital and within the scope of professional license;
  • Obtain and document subjective history (interval or comprehensive) as appropriate to chief complaint or reason for visit;
  • Conduct relevant physical exam documenting pertinent positive and negative physical findings;
  • Identify a diagnostic impression or assessment and/or formulate a differential based on the subjective and objective data obtained;
  • Formulate a goal-directed plan that includes health maintenance, anticipatory guidance and appropriate medical, mental health and health-education interventions according to established protocol;
  • Assess and document patient response to treatment and interventions;
  • Provide and document a) health education that is oriented to appropriate problems and/or b) developmentally and culturally appropriate health maintenance or anticipatory guidance;
  • Consult and/or refer according to protocols and professional judgment;
  • Initiate and maintain/reconcile a problem/medication list for each patient.

B. Documentation/Charting and Coding

  • Ensure that all patient encounters (consultations, referrals and follow-ups) are charted and coded in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with billing compliance guidelines.
  • Complete On-Line School Clinic Data Repository (OSCR) data entry within 72 hours.

C. Training/Continuing Education and Credentialing

  • Attend mandated educational programs;
  • Participate, as appropriate, in the orientation, staff-development and/or attaining certification in specialty;
  • Maintain all licenses, registrations and certifications.

D. Quality Assurance, Teaching, and Research

  • Act as an advocate for the patient in the health care system;
  • Conduct review of patient records in collaboration with peers to determine quality and appropriateness of care provided;
  • Engage in ongoing peer review and quality improvement activities;
  • Monitor the quality of health care services through participation and implementation of various quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Implement changes to existing medical protocols and processes, as identified through the MSAHC CQI process;
  • Develop and implement special projects (e.g., continuous quality improvement, protocols, EMR smartphrases, etc.) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the SBHC and enhance the role of the SBHC within the school.

E. School Relationships

  • Respond to health emergencies in the school building and assist in mental health emergencies at the school;
  • Participate in school liaison activities, including principals' council meetings, parent association meetings, and other activities that enhance the relationship between the health center and building administration;
  • Work with school personnel to develop and implement health policies and procedures in the school;
  • Meet with school administrators at least annually to complete the School-Based Health Center & School Principal Collaborative Protocols.
  • Lead role in school outreach and attending selected school faculty and administrative meetings;
  • Attend Parent Association meetings in the evening (coordinate shared duty with other SBHC team members);
  • Meet with school administration for communication/collaboration Meet with school guidance, together with social worker, relating to ongoing collaboration and referrals.
  • Coordinate with special groups in the school;
  • Attend school-based clinic conferences on a case by case basis.

F. Other

  • Track and maintain inventory of medications and vaccines, including ordering vaccines and managing temperature excursions and expired vaccines/medications;
  • Contribute to quarterly reports to NYS DOH and other funding agencies;
  • Work at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center when school is not in session;
  • Work at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center on selected Saturdays.
Qualifications
  • MD Degree with Board Eligible/Certification in Pediatrics or Family Medicine;
  • Commitment to MSAHC's vision, mission and approach in order to ensure a patient-centric culture which is collaborative and multidisciplinary;
  • A passion for working with young people and a work ethic in which a commitment to understanding and solving the needs of each patient is a priority;
  • A commitment to, and experience in building systems of care for vulnerable populations, particularly adolescents and young adults;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging;
  • NYS license;
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, empathy, compassion and patience;
  • Exceptional management skills. Strong commitment to mentoring, recruiting and retaining a diverse team in a multi-cultural environment;
  • An accessible, visible and flexible management style that inspires trust and confidence in staff to work hard and well together;
  • A multi-tasker with the ability to respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment;

Compensation range from 150K to 185K (not including bonuses/incentive compensation or benefits).

Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialties, historical productivity, historical collections, and hospital/community need. As such, an actual salary may fall closer to one or the other end of the range, and in certain circumstances, may wind up being outside of the listed salary range. The salary range listed is for full-time employment and does not include bonuses/incentive compensation or benefits.
