Job Description
Basic Purpose
Positions in this family provide peer support services, serve as advocates for consumers, and provide information and peer support for consumers in emergency, outpatient or inpatient settings. The positions perform duties to assist consumers with recovery processes as they regain control of their lives.
Typical Functions
* Facilitate peer support groups
* Teach and mentor the value of every individual's recovery experience
* Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies
* Proactively engage consumers and possess communication skills/ability to transfer new concepts, ideas, and insight to others.
* Assist service recipients in articulating personal goals for recovery
* Assist service recipients in determining the objectives needed to reach his/her recovery goals
* Provide and advocate for effective recovery-oriented services
* Assist consumers in obtaining services that suit that individual's recovery needs
* Inform consumers about community and natural supports and how to utilize these in the recovery process
* Assist consumers in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy
* De-escalate consumers when needed using TherapeuticOptions (TherOps) training
* Demonstrate confidentiality regarding all aspects of cases
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Knowledge required to perform work at this level includes providing casework services at all difficulty and complexity levels. Utilizes increased advocacy and recovery knowledge; basic written and oral communications; and basic computer operation. May provide guidance and in-house training, to lower level staff in the areas of peer services, wellness, and recovery.
Skills required are effective listening and communicating; working in a team setting; and time management.
Abilities required include interpreting and recording observations and activities; following oral and written directions; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
Level Descriptor
This is the advanced level of the job family, where employees work under moderate supervision from the supervisor and perform assigned professional responsibilities and casework maintenance. At this level, employees provide guidance and in-house training in the areas of wellness and recovery.
Education and Experience
The education requirement at this level consists of a high school diploma or GED, two years of experience as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist, and current certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist.
Special Requirements
Demonstrated participation in advocacy in and/or personal knowledge of recovery.
Upon a conditional offer of employment, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services applicants must submit to a physical examination and shall meet the physical examination requirements of occasionally lifting/carrying 50 pounds and able to push and pull a maximum force of 25 pounds.
