JOB OVERVIEW

The Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH) is located at George Washington University. The Office of Admissions and Enrollment within the GWSPH has an independent financial aid division that oversees awarding of $6 million in institutional scholarship and need-based aid to students in our graduate programs. Additionally, we advise students on all their financial aid needs, including but not limited to merit scholarships, need-based aid, and federal awarding. The Office of Admissions and Enrollment is seeking an experienced Financial Aid Officer to join our progressive team.

This position provides advice, counsel, and exceptional service in processing financial aid requests in accordance with university and federal guidelines. The core responsibilities of this role are to evaluate and analyze financial information submitted by applicants to determine eligibility for assistance and to determine the appropriate award, to screen and counsel applicants about available financial aid opportunities, to coordinate some technical aspects of the financial aid programs, and to process and package requests for financial aid. This position may also investigate financial aid/loan discrepancies and student accounts for accuracy, evaluate students' academic performance to ensure satisfactory academic progress, and respond to inquiries and research and resolve problems.

This position will report to the Associate Director of Financial Aid.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Manage $6 million in merit-based scholarships and need-based grants.
  • Meet and advise students in person, over the phone, and via email about graduate school finances including but not limited to institutional aid, federal loans, and external scholarship options to include:
    • Advise students appropriately as it relates to which program students are starting in and how previous borrowing may affect their graduate federal financial aid options.
    • Advise students completing programs in-person and online.
  • Manage CSS Profiles and evaluate and recommend need-based aid.
  • Track and provide weekly reports of questions students are asking as it relates to their financial aid.
  • Attend admissions events and webinars to answer questions students may have about financial aid, as well as other duties as assigned.
  • Monitor changes issued by the federal government relating to federal aid.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in financial aid advising (undergraduate or otherwise). The incumbent will need to have background and knowledge of how undergraduate loans affect graduate loans and be able to advise students on how to best finance their graduate education.
  • Customer service experience, preferably in a higher education setting. This can include over-the-phone, in-person, and via email.
  • Previous experience using a financial aid system, preferably Banner. Salesforce experience preferred.
  • Experience with CSS profiles and/or ISFAA preferred.
  • Public speaking skills.
  • Strong knowledge of federal financial aid practices in undergraduate and graduate settings.
Hiring Range:

$45,925.13 - $63,191.56
