Position Summary
The Fire Protection Engineer designs and creates systems, products, and procedures that prevent, control, and mitigate the effects of fires through passive fire protection. This role provides technical expertise within the department.
Responsibilities
•Create engineering judgments to provide US and Canadian customers with custom firestopping details to address UL 1479, UL 2079, ASTM E2307, and CAN/ULC S115 firestopping applications that are not currently listed with Balco or Rectorseal.
•Responsible for providing UL 269/ASTM E119 (CAN/ULS-S101 for Canada) engineering judgements for Intumescent Fireproofing (IFRM) product line
•Utilize IBC and NBCC code language to provide code compliant solutions and assist in code interpretation regarding firestop applications and other general fire protection-related inquiries
•Create ECOs, part specifications, and other documents necessary to implement new products and design changes
•Consultation with customers and internal sales representatives to provide optimized, custom solutions that are in compliance with the alternative means and methods requirements in the building code.
•Responsible for technical design review, product installation & troubleshooting existing installation errors
•Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics using Solidworks Simulation
•Design and perform in-house testing to validate designs
•Coordinate with third-party test labs to validate designs
•Perform other duties as needed

•Proficient in Solidworks, AutoCAD, or similar modeling software & Microsoft Office Suite
•Strong understanding of Architectural life-safety products
•Familiarity with local education facilities, testing facilities, machine shops and equipment suppliers
Experience
•Fire Protection Design experience in passive fire protection (fire barriers, fire stopping/resistant coatings, fire resistant joint systems and through penetration systems).
•Experience using CAD is required, and experience with SolidWorks is preferred
•Proven track record of providing outstanding technical support and customer service to internal and external US and Canadian customer through phone calls, emails, and online platforms
Education
•High school diploma or equivalent is required.
•Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Technology, Fire Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or equivalent field preferred, or 3+ years of applicable work experience as a Fire Protection Engineer or similar role will be considered.
Other Requirements
•Physical- This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
•Travel to test labs and/or job sites to support Balco's interest as required
Pay Range of $75,000.00 to $95,000.00 plus a annual bonus of 14%-16% depending on experience
