Position Summary
This position works under close progressing to limited supervision and reports to the Criminalistics Supervisor. The emphasis is in developing skills in working with and understanding the forensic processing of firearms, tool marks, serial number restoration, and other analytical procedures used in this unit; and developing an understanding of and applying the statutes, rules, regulations, administrative codes and standards required in the program area. Firearms Examiners may be in contact with outside entities and may have assignments which cross program lines. The supervisor reviews the work to determine the completeness or accuracy and adherence to policy.
Positions in this series perform examinations and comparisons to determine matches of bullets, firearms, cartridge cases, firing pin impressions, and breech block markings. These positions determine the serviceability of firearms in all cases and establish the proximity of the firearm at the time of discharge. Positions compare tool and toolmark impressions and apply restorative/reconstructive techniques to obliterated serial numbers and other identifying marks on a variety of objects.
Salary Information
The Firearms and Toolmark Examiner position in in pay schedule 15 and pay range 04. The starting pay range will be between $27.00 - $32.00/hrs. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required.
Job Details
This position may be eligible to work remotely up to one day per week as part of a hybrid schedule, following an initial training period, reporting to the headquarters in Wausau, including reporting on multiple consecutive workdays if needed. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement.
High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.

A background check, including fingerprints, will be completed on applicants prior to selection.
Qualifications
Minimally qualified applicants must have education, training and/or experience in the following:
* Experience in a laboratory setting.
* Knowledge of practices used for safe evidence handling.
* Knowledge of firearms safe handling practices.
* Has had work experience(s) that were repetitive and required a high level of attention to detail and involved visual/mental tasks.
In addition to the minimum qualifications, a well-qualified applicant will have education, training, and/or experience in the following:
* Experience applying scientific methods to independently process items of evidence.
* Experience applying quality assurance and quality control procedures in a laboratory setting. Extra points can be given if in a forensic laboratory setting.
* Completed a formal firearms safety training program or been trained through previous occupation. (Example: Hunter Safety Course, CCW course, Military or Police training programs)
