The Probationary/Trainee Firefighter position works as a team member learning to respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and rescue calls to save lives, protect property and ease pain and suffering. Essential Functions
- Perform emergency medical services (EMS) based on current designated certification level, as defined by the Missoula Fire Department Medical Director.
- Conduct fire prevention inspections for local businesses.
- Assist in developing firefighting pre-plans for specific buildings and areas.
- Perform specialized rescues, extricate victims from traffic accidents, hazardous materials recognition, and mitigation at the operations level.
- Operate as a Firefighter on an engine company at emergency scenes, as defined by the Missoula Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG).
- Assist with fire education.
- Complete a variety of training courses on firefighting, EMS, rescues, hazardous materials, etc.; complete certifications in wildlands firefighting, hazardous materials operations level, International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) manuals.
- Clean fire station and perform preventative vehicle maintenance.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of EMT-Basic skills and standards.
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn emergency rescue, including the purpose and use of rescue tools, equipment, vehicles, and apparatus.
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn the principles, practices, techniques related to fire suppression and procedures, including the purpose and use various firefighting tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of and ability to promote department safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines, including risk management techniques to reduce exposure to injury, damage, and liability.
- Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365, and the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.
- Skill in public speaking, with the ability to train and present data, reports, and other findings to a variety of diverse groups and individuals.
- Skill in safely operating various tools, equipment, and computer systems related to emergency services, with the ability to learn job specific applications, databases, and equipment.
- Skill in organization, time management and prioritizing with the proven ability to have keen attention to detail and accuracy in performing work with adherence to strict deadlines.
- Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of diverse identities, perspectives, and cultural backgrounds.

Working Conditions:
- Duties require the physical ability necessary to work extended periods of time, properly use heavy tools and lifting heavy objects from awkward positions and the use of stairs, ladders, and steep inclines to access work sites.
- Work environment may include exposure to occupational hazards, chemicals, biohazards, construction hazards, and physical risks, including extreme heat, uneven terrain, adverse weather, and working in confined spaces, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Duties are performed in fire stations and at worksites involving structure or wildland fires, vehicle crashes, and other emergency sites.
- Duties may involve significant contact with people in emergency situations, which require situational awareness to ensure safety.
- Position is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing, as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Qualifications and Additional Application Materials
- Must meet all qualifications of firefighters, as stated for Municipal Fire Departments in Montana Code Annotated. ()
- Must have Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic National Registration Card.
- Must have a valid Montana driver's license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Must pass a fingerprint background check.
