Job Description and Duties

Be essential working in the great outdoors at the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW), where employees are valued and come together to manage and protect California's diverse fish, wildlife, and habitats, for their ecological values and public enjoyment! CDFW owns and manages many public lands and needs people to help improve habitat for wildlife, maintain infrastructure, facilities, remove trash and maintain the wildlife areas for public access. This position will assist with reducing the threat of wildfire and create conditions that will make CDFW lands more resilient to wildfire by using various equipment such as power tools and hand tools to achieve the goals of the program. This is a hourly position.

The Fish and Wildlife Seasonal Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions

Office will be located at the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. Involves working irregular hours, including nights, weekends, or holidays and to travel to perform field work, including working outdoors in inclement weather on uneven ground and on boats. Willingness to do heavy manual labor, and to wear a prescribed uniform.

Special Requirements

Must be able to lift 40 pounds and to be able to work independently in the field. Willingness to travel to attend training's related to job duties (with supervisory approval and at the Department's expense). Health consistent with performing strenuous fieldwork (i.e., trail construction, hiking, wading, swimming, brush clearing).

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Good driving record; Background in construction-related activities, wild land fire work, trail work and equipment maintenance. Interest in and/or knowledge of trapping, hunting, fishing, or studying fish, wildlife, invertebrates, or plants; experience in camping, boating, and maintaining or repairing equipment. Familiarity with hand and power tools including brush mowers, weed trimmers, drills, skill saws, and/or chainsaws.
