Includes but not limited to setting up traffic control zones and operating paddles. This position is also part of the maintenance crew and assists with the various labor activities to maintain of the road.Salary upon hire for a Flagger/Maintenance Aide is Step 1 through 3 ($21.12/hr. - $22.64/hr.) dependent upon qualifications. Progressive increases are based upon years of service with Skagit County, up to 8 total steps (top step is $26.92/hr.). The Flagger/Maintenance Aide is Range 8 of the AFSCME Public Works salary schedule. Essential Functions
- Sets up traffic control zones to alert motorists of road maintenance work in progress.
- Coordinates with maintenance crew to develop a traffic control plan that assures proper placement of signs to ensure safety of workers and the public.
- Directs traffic through work sites to ensure safety of workers and the public.
- Assists the Maintenance Technicians with duties such as ditching, patching, chip box operations, tree removal; assists in Sign Shop with assembling signs, etc.
- Maintains proper inventory of equipment and flagging signs. Keeps inventory in a neat and orderly manner.
- Operates pilot car and places cones for activities such as striping and movement of oversized equipment and ensures the safety of the workers and the public during those activities.
- Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provides information within the scope of knowledge.
- Installs and removes temporary signs, i.e., traffic signs and emergency operation signs to ensure safety of workers and the public.
- Assists in keeping fleet and equipment clean, assists with facility maintenance and yard maintenance as directed.

Minimum Qualifications Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical path to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Prior flagging experience preferred but not required.
- All Road Maintenance Workers are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Job offer will be conditioned on a satisfactory results of pre-employment drug testing as allowed or required by law. Applicants are subject to a criminal background check as part of the hiring process.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time in all types of weather, lift signs and equipment up to 40 pounds, and perform physical labor. This is a safety sensitive position for which impairment while working presents a substantial risk of death.HAZARDS:Potential hazards present from traffic and road equipment.
