Nature of Work

Fayette, Nicholas, Raleigh County

Wildlife/Games Management Under the direction of the Game Management Unit Forestry Program Specialist, employee will perform professional forestry and biological work at the professional level. May supervise seasonal and other temporary personnel assigned to the same project area. Works closely with district game management staff and forest management program staff to identify forest land management practices to be implemented on wildlife management areas and in the delineation and completion of such practices. Coordinates the required measures in developing timber sales on state lands, bid package development, marking and cruising timber sales and monitoring of timber management activities. Has a thorough working knowledge of forestry practices and principles to carry out the agency's forest management activities on state wildlife management areas. Has a working knowledge of herbicide and application techniques. Work requires overnight travel throughout the state. Has latitude to exercise independent judgment in execution of duties. Office location will be determined depending on county of residence within the counties of location of vacancy. Must have a valid driver's license. Activities may be performed outside in varying weather conditions and over difficult terrain. Must possess good writing and verbal communication skills. A strong background in wildlife management and forest management is desired. Performs related work as required. Regular attendance is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Training:Associate degree in a Forest Technology program recognized by the Society of American ForestersORa Bachelor's degree in a forestry program accredited by the Society of American Foresters.

Experience:One year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in the field of forestry.

Special Requirement: Must have a current license as a registered professional forester or a registered forestry technician or in the process of obtaining professional licensure. Must have a valid driver's license.

Must take and pass a physical examination within in the first six months of employment and submit to annual follow-up examinations. Failure to pass the initial examination will result in termination of employment. Failure to pass a subsequent examination may result in reassignment.

Positions must meet the qualifications for and become a Special Natural Resources Police Officer at the earliest opportunity following employment and maintain this commission throughout the period of employment in the position. This requirement may be waived at the discretion of the State Forester.
