Role Summary Free People Movement is seeking a Design Director to lead our To/From category. The To/From category takes the customer from the studio to the street including elevated athliesure, heavy knits, fleeces and third pieces. The Design Director actively participates in designing seasonal collections , leads and mentors team members to ensure that designs and resulting product are appropriate for the Free People Movement Customer. Role Responsibilities The FP Movement Design Director actively participates in designing and communicating original ideas for key meetings, and supporting/mentoring the team to ensure that designs and resulting product are cohesive and appropriate for the Free People Movement customer. The Design Director also will oversee and mentor junior team members.
  • Design, creation, development, and execution of own brand product appropriate for Free People Movement To/From category with a focus bringing a graceful hand to non performance active/casual/streetwear.
  • Recognize and accurately forecast fashion and cultural trends and understand how they relate to the Free People Movement customer.
  • Respond to business objectives with creative, innovative, and cost-effective design solutions.
  • Attend all fittings and support the Team through problem solving fit issues and communicating.
  • Support seasonal development calendar for both Retail & Wholesale deliveries.
  • Manage development and execution of all design packages and participates in all follow-up communication related to each package in partnership with the Design Coordinator & Product Development team.
  • Strong initiative and point of view on design research and staying up to date with industry trend direction, color direction, and fabric innovations that can relate to the Free People Movement target customer.
  • Execute original design ideas through sketching, draped & sewn mocks and/or Ai to communicate design's vision in key meetings.
Role Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design or a closely related field and 10+ Years relevant experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the Free People Movement aesthetic, brand position and customer.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with partners in Merchandising, Production, and oversees vendors.
  • Efficiently and swiftly able to pivot and adapt to changing calendar and business needs. Must be organized and able to time manage multiple seasons at once.
  • Ability to research and report on industry trend direction, color direction, and fabric innovations approximately 9-12 months ahead of season.
  • Ability to recognize and accurately forecast fashion and cultural trends as they relate to the Free People Movement target customer.
  • Ability to respond to business objectives with creative, innovative, and cost-effective design solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of jersey knit and woven garment construction.
  • Strong knowledge of fabric and trims as well as strong relationships with resources.
  • Strong knowledge of fabric treatments as well as wash and dye techniques.
  • Working understanding of manufacturing techniques and processes.
  • Ability to sketch or to communicate design ideas via computer program, sewing, mocking and draping. Expertise in Adobe creative Suite.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Ability to live within a commutable distance and work on-site 4-5 days per week at our Home Office in Philadelphia, PA required.
