JOB SUMMARY The Recreation Assistant performs a wide variety of duties associated with meeting the needs of the Longview Residents to enhance and/or maintain an overall quality of life through cognitive, social and physical programming. The position requires knowledge of leadership, group dynamics and therapeutic recreation skills. This person should have an understanding of the needs and interests of older individuals and motivation factors. Includes the preparation and leadership of recreation programs, assisting with the training of volunteers and managerial needs of the department. Under the general supervision of the Adult Day Program Coordinator, the Adult Day Program Assistant is responsible for assisting with program activities, supervising participants, and seeing their personal needs are met as required. JOB DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops, prepares for, and implements recreational and adult day programming and special events at Longview.
  • Assists the recreation director with the training and supervision of volunteers, work study and interns.
  • Ensures that residents are informed of recreation programs and assists residents in getting to and from programs.
  • Conducts an inventory of supplies and submits purchase requisitions to supervisors.
  • Help prepare, print and distribute copies of monthly calendar, newsletters and memos to residents and tenants.
  • Become fully conversant with audio/visual equipment.
  • Organizes groups and drives the Longview vehicles from community-based programming. Must pass a driving test in the Longview vehicles.
  • Assists in coordinating entertainment and supplies for special events.
  • Sets up and operates equipment, leads games, discussions, conducts/leads exercise class and engages in one-to-one interaction with participants.
  • Works closely with volunteers assigned to assist with specific duties.
  • Assists with serving meals and snacks and keeps areas in clean, orderly condition.
  • Monitors changes in participant's physical or mental status and immediately conveys these to coordinator, and/or family members and if necessary emergency responders.
  • Assists coordinator with maintaining records system in accordance with NYS DOH regulations, Longview policies and procedures, processing admissions and discharge procedures, develops a plan of care and updates as needs change, plans and carries out daily scheduled programs.
  • Must be available evenings and weekends for special events.

Requirements REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Preferred two-year college degree in field of human services, gerontology or health care, or two-years' experience working with older adults.
    • Experience working with older adults.
    • Knowledge of leadership, group dynamics, and therapeutic recreation skills
    • Knowledge of the needs, interests, health problems, abilities, motivations, attitudes and needs of aging population.
    • Friendly, kind and person-centered.
    • Strong ability to multi-task with excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to establish priorities, multitask and work independently or with group.
    • Valid Driver's License
