Description
- Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; providing examination gowns and drapes; helping them to position themselves for the examination and/or treatment; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment. Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reconcile and queue patient medications, reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs, weight, and other pertinent information; confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
- Supports patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic laboratory tests on the premises; disposing of contaminated supplies; sterilizing medical instruments; administering medications on the premises; authorizing drug refills as directed; telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies; taking electrocardiograms; removing sutures; changing dressings.
- Administers injections after demonstrated competency and with understanding of dosage, side effects, allergic reaction, and after checking order and dosage with provider.
- Educates patients by providing medication and diet information and instructions; answering questions. Provides discharge instructions and schedules follow up appointment as instructed by the provider.
- Takes telephone messages and provide feedback and answers to patients/provider/pharmacy and documents appropriately.
- Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medicines, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid change.)
- Maintains treatment room, restocking, cleaning and taking instruments to OR to be sterilized.
- Practices within the guidelines of job description and refers patients to provider if unable to provide/satisfy patient needs or answer questions.
- Contributes to Quality Improvement and Job Hazard Analysis processes for department.
- Effectively maintains ongoing communication with co-workers and practice manager, keeping them informed of pertinent information that effects patients care, provider issues, and/or other departmental issues of concern.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service skills in dealing with providers, staff, peers, and public/customers.
- Must be proficient in use of EHR application, ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of hospital Meditech application.
- Demonstrates knowledge of universal precautions and sterile technique.
RequirementsBLS required upon hire and maintained throughout employment. High School diploma and Medical Assistant, EMT, or Paramedic education completed upon hire. CMA or RMA certification required within 6 months of hire and maintained throughout employment. Willingness to obtain State of Michigan TB Certification. One year of medical experience preferred.
