The Position: Provide student support and advising to a specific group of at-risk students in need of assistance and guidance throughout the program. Determine what obstacles confront students and then provide solutions to obstacles, in order to help ensure that students achieve their educational goals. Specifically, improve rates at which students persist from semester to semester, improve rates at which students identify their educational goals and develop plans to achieve them, and improve rates at which students transfer to four year institutions.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:Customer Service
  • Communicate regularly with a targeted group of students and offering individualized attention to assist with academic progress and success.
  • Offer support through providing the necessary referrals and recommendations needed to move the student through their program.
  • Develop and maintain a case management system to track students and their academic progress throughout their program.
  • Demonstrate a strong customer service and/or student advocacy through a positive attitude of approachability, adaptability, strong problem solving and desire to identify and support student success.
Leadership and Planning
  • Support the Dean and Program Chairs in working with other staff within the school to improve and maximize services and develop student persistence and student success strategies.
  • Participate in college initiatives to improve student success services.
Student Support
  • Organize resources necessary to help students access services essential for student success.
  • Identify areas for improvement in processes and procedures needed to impact student persistence and success.
  • Complete tracking and appropriate reports.
  • Build effective and trusting relationships with students through continuous communication, evaluation of progress toward educational goals, and revision of the academic success plans.
  • Monitor student progress through regular meetings, communications, interventions, assessments, and data collection.
  • Assist students in understanding and navigating college policies and procedures.
Technical Support
  • Enter data and manage electronic student files, track student progress, and contact students on a regular basis to improve student success.
  • Assist in developing Academic Plan

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Expertise in software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Must have good customer service skills, and show initiative by actively welcoming and engaging students.
  • Must possess patience and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely with a diverse population.
  • Analytical reasoning, independent problem solving, and ability to reach conclusions based on customer needs.
  • Ability to foster collegial working relationships.
  • A passion for working with students to guide them to goal achievement
  • Must work on own initiative and be responsible for setting own appointments and be able to follow through on commitments to students, others, and committees.
  • Must be able to process information quickly and to apply and relay that knowledge in the performance of his/her advising duties.
