This position is located at:

New Bern, NC

Primary Purpose of Position:

The Gardener at Tryon Palace will perform all levels of garden and grounds maintenance required to maintain the highest aesthetic standards throughout the property.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Responsible for general daily care of landscape including trees, shrubs, annual and perennial beds, which include detailed weeding, fertilizing, mowing, pruning, shearing, hedges, and applying pesticides.

* Prepare seasonal high-quality horticultural displays in assigned garden areas for public view.

* Maintain lawns, marl paths, sidewalks, and mulched beds.

* Propose planting plans and select culturally adapted and historical plantings to improve appearance of the gardens.

* Contribute to educational quality of horticultural exhibits through research.

* Support special events by preparing gardens and grounds for interpretive/educational events and third-party events.

* Provide customer service at bi-annual heritage plant sale and holiday Candlelight event.

Position/Physical Requirements:

* Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 90 days of employment.

* Must be able to work 7:30 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday, with weekend work on a regular rotation and as needed for special events.

* Requires lifting some heavy materials (50 - 100 lbs.),

* Must be able to perform repetitive manual tasks.

* Must be able to operate power equipment.

* Must be able to obtain NC Pesticide License within 9 months of employment.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

* Knowledge in plant maintenance procedures used in landscape installation and garden maintenance.

* Working knowledge to observe and identify plants and plant problems, assess condition and health of plants, and propose solutions to problems.

* Demonstrated experience safely handling and applying pesticides and/or fertilizers.

* Demonstrated experience with plant maintenance such as pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and/or spraying of plant material.

* Demonstrated experience in basic computer skills for research, record keeping, and/or time entry.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

AND

two years of progressive experience in horticultural work;

OR

Associate's degree in agriculture and natural resources, greenhouse and grounds maintenance, horticulture technology, landscape gardening or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.
