This person will work within the Furniture and Decorative Arts department supporting the Director of department and team of specialists with business-getting and cataloguing property for sale. This person will also work with the Trusts and Estates team as a general appraiser on estate tax appraisals.Responsibilities:
- Source and provide auction estimates for property in Furniture and Decorative Arts auctions
- Provide auction support, as needed, including researching and cataloguing lots for auction, and preparing detailed condition reports for prospective bidders
- Conduct regular estate tax appraisals as a member of Trusts and Estates team and prepare appraisal documents to USPAP standards
- Ensure that property catalogued for sale and included in estate tax appraisals meets the highest standard of expertise and presentation
- Work with Trusts and Estates team to convert appraisals to sales
- Maintain effective communication with colleagues in other departments and parts of the business
- Continually build and expand own specialist expertise and connoisseurship
Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years of experience identifying, appraising and cataloguing American and European furniture and decorative arts in an auction house, gallery, or related field
- Understanding of auction house culture, principles and practices
- Strong commercial awareness and the ability to think strategically
- Excellent research and organizational skills
- Ability to multitask and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
