Job Announcement Under the direction of the supervisor, will lead and train a trades crew in the area of building maintenance. The general crew will/may consist of carpenters, general building maintenance workers, painters, and maintenance trade helper level staff. Performs general repair and maintenance of architectural and structural systems in county buildings. Items such as doors, windows, floors, walls ceiling stairs, office furniture, shelving, roof repairs and other related work. Safely operates, cleans, maintains, and stores a variety of stationery and hand tools, inspects facilities to identify architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing deficiencies, also conducts building safety inspections. Prepares work requests for all necessary architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing repairs and maintenance, coordinates with facility users to correct deficiencies in building systems. As a lead technician, the General Building Maintenance Worker II may be required to assist and temporarily cover for the Chief Building Engineer. Duties include:
  • installation and repair of systems furniture, renovation of buildings, repair of roof systems, general maintenance of doors, windows, walls, shelving.
  • Provides installation and repair of work as it relates to plumbing and electrical systems and switches.
  • Participates in preventive maintenance as assigned.
  • Recommends design and suggests change for the betterment of the work area and/or work functions.
  • Serves as lead technician for trades crew that consists of Carpenters and General Building Maintenance Workers.
  • Performs other maintenance duties as requested. Note: Incumbent is considered emergency essential. Flexible working schedule is required as well as overtime, call-back and on-call. This announcement may be used to fill multiple positions. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to ) Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program in a specific trade with two years of full performance-level experience in building maintenance, repair and/or construction trades work; or three years of full performance level experience in two or more skilled trades related to building maintenance and repair work. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid driver's license NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • At least five years of experience in Commercial Carpentry and with general knowledge of interior finishes.
    • Knowledge in other trades such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC and/or architectural and structural systems.
    • Basic computer skills such as Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance of staff or a dolly. Must be able to stoop, bend and work in tiring/uncomfortable conditions for extended periods of time. Must be physically able to climb both step and extension ladders to various heights.
