For full-time employees our benefits information can be found here. General Summary Under close supervision, performs entry-level unskilled manual work. May perform the following tasks depending upon the assigned division: custodial work involved with cleaning offices; carries, loads and unloads materials and equipment; digs, shovels and rakes grounds; cleans work sites, sewers, drains and catch basins; assists in the preparation of food and cleans kitchen and dining areas; feeds and cares for animals in the animal shelter and keeps cages and equipment clean; assists higher level employees in building alterations and repairs; performs duties involved with the receiving and releasing of bodies from the County morgue; pumps gas and changes tires; or performs other routine unskilled work as assigned. Is alert to hazards and follows department safety and emergency procedures. Periodically patrols assigned buildings. Checks for any signs of unauthorized entry, or immediate hazards, and reports any problems to the appropriate authorities. May be scheduled for a day, afternoon or midnight shift, including weekends and holidays.After successful completion of a six (6) month probationary period, General Helpers are promoted to a higher level classification such as Animal Shelter Attendant, Custodial Worker I, Maintenance Laborer, Parks Helper, Groundskeeper I and/or Parks Maintenance Aide, depending upon the assigned division. Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Have passed their 18th birthday; OR be at least 16 years old and a high school graduate; OR have completed the state requirements for the General Educational Development Test (GED); OR be an emancipated minor.
  • Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical established for this classification. NOTE: A valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license will be required for certain positions. Out of Country driver's license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver's license before the hire date.
  • Successfully complete the six month probationary period.
  • Special Requirements
  • Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license (for positions which require driving).
  • WITHIN CHILDREN'S VILLAGE Applicants for positions at Children's Village will not be considered if they have been convicted of either of the following: (a) Child Abuse or Neglect (b) A felony involving harm or threatened harm to an individual within the 10 years immediately preceding the date of hire. Before beginning employment, candidates will be required to provide Children's Village with documentation from the Michigan Department of Human Services (previously called Family Independence Agency) that they have not been named in a central registry case as the perpetrator of child abuse or child neglect. In addition, applicants being considered for hire will be asked to sign a form authorizing Children's Village to request and receive a criminal history check in accordance with the privacy act of 1974.
