The General Maintenance Helper position is an entry level position that reports to a department lead. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Job Requirements The following are required: A high school diploma or equivalent. Work experience indicating ability to perform the essential job functions. A valid Alaska driver's license. Basic familiarity with plumbing systems. Basic familiarity with painting. Basic familiarity with carpentry. Basic familiarity with grounds maintenance. One year of maintenance experience within the last three years. A State of Alaska Boiler Operator's Certificate of Fitness: 4th class within 12 months of hire. Essential Job Functions Performs preventive maintenance on plumbing and heating systems. Performs routine cleaning of boilers, boiler rooms, fan rooms, and other mechanical spaces. Assists with minor building repairs. Works independently to perform assigned tasks. Performs skilled work in maintenance and repair. Routinely lifts up to 50 pounds, with or without accommodations, or lifts over 50 pounds with assistance. Routinely works at heights over 20 feet. Follows both oral and written instructions and writes reports. Uses appropriate computer applications for assigned area of responsibility. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others. Works within established safety procedures. Physical /Mental Demands The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
